\r\nSo, as David Rodock reported this morning in the VDT\r\n solid waste management <\/a>\r\nwas a discussion topic for Lowndes County Commissioners,<\/a>\r\neven though it wasn’t on yesterday’s\r\n\r\nwork session agenda.\r\n<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\nInteresting that a meeting was held after the work session.\r\nI was at the work session, camera in hand, and you can see what\r\ntranspired there with talk of the\r\n jail <\/a>,\r\nthe possibility of\r\n\r\nSunday alcohol package sales<\/a>,\r\noh and the\r\n\r\nanimal shelter <\/a>\r\nall during the County Manager’s Reports.\r\n

\r\nNothing has been said (in public) about solid waste disposal since the\r\npublic meetings where the pubic was told by Chairman Rod Casey and\r\nCounty Manager Pritchard\r\nthat the county staff had “examined every option” and there was nothing\r\nthat the public could possibly suggest that hadn’t already been considered.\r\n

\r\nThe proposed plan\r\n\r\n(VDT Article August 29, 2008 Lowndes County’s proposed solid waste plan in effect Jan 1)\r\n<\/a>\r\nwas basically curbside\r\ncollection (where no vendor could meet the proposed price cap suggested by the county)\r\nand what we ended up with was\r\npay for drop off permits\r\n\r\n(VDT Article May 13, 2009 Solid waste disposal permits now available). <\/a>\r\n

\r\nJoe Pritchard remembers those meetings like this\r\n(Update 25 Sept 2013 to add reference,<\/em> “Commissioners want Lowndes out of the trash business”<\/a> by David Rodock in the VDT 24 May 2011):\r\n

\r\n\u201cI went through eight public meetings, better described as floggings, where the public just vented every ounce of frustration they ever had relating to solid waste over that time period,\u201d said Joe Pritchard, county manager. \u201cThat was not a pleasant process. Yes, we need to come up with a way of notifying the public, but I\u2019m here to tell you, that public meetings is not it.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nSo, the problem (disposing of garbage costs money) still exists and the county\r\nhas known that for years. Yet, here we are on the cusp of a crisis again and\r\nCommissioner Raines says\r\n

\r\n\u201cMy mind\u2019s made up and I\u2019m willing to call an emergency meeting tonight if we need to\u201d\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nWhy hasn’t the county been soliciting input during these two years that they\r\nknew the system was out of balance? Why must everything be a crisis?\r\n
