\r\nA few years ago,\r\na doctor in Valdosta applied for a variance<\/a>\r\nfor solar panels over his parking lot.\r\nThe Zoning Board of Approvals (ZBOA) tabled it,\r\nbecause Valdosta’s Land Development Regulations (LDR)\r\ndid not permit that.\r\nI think he then made the panels connected to his building,\r\nwhich put them a different and already-permitted category.\r\n

\r\nWhat if Valdosta and other local governments updated their codes\r\nto enable parking lot and other solar power?\r\n

We will produce a comprehensive document that addresses multiple scales and types of solar energy systems that counties and cities can adopt and adapt to their needs.”\r\n

\r\n“To ensure transparency and neutrality in developing the model\r\nordinance, we have scheduled a series of public meetings to give all\r\ninterested parties a voice in the process. We welcome your\r\nattendance at any and all of the meetings, where we will solicit\r\nyour input on the draft ordinance, and discuss the opportunities,\r\nconcerns, and envisioned outcomes. These meetings will also\r\nintroduce the Renewable Energy Technical Assistance Program (ReTAP)\r\na USDA funded program at the University of Georgia which provides\r\ntechnical assistance and education to individuals, businesses and\r\ncommunities interested in deploying solar and other renewable energy\r\nprojects.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThere are two other workshops, four hours away in Savannah and Atlanta.\r\nTifton is much closer.\r\n

\r\nComparing it with the Georgia one, it looks like Georgia has more sun.\r\nBut that’s only because the scales are different.\r\nThis detail from\r\n\r\na national NREL map found on Georgia Power<\/a>\r\nshows south Georgia and north Florida have similar amounts of sun,\r\nwith more in southwest Florida.\r\n
