\r\nYesterday the Valdosta Board of Education voted for the sun.\r\n

\r\nThe school system will begin leasing some of its extra property to\r\nthe solar energy company Radiance Solar.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Solar<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nRadiance Solar will reportedly pay\r\n\r\n $30,000 per year to lease the\r\nland, and the agreement is for 25 years. VCS says the money will go\r\nback into the school system.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nRadiance Solar will construct a 1.5 megawatt solar array near the\r\ntransportation hub.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThat has linked into it the lease option agreement<\/a>\r\nand a map<\/a>, which is the one shown above.\r\n

\r\nThis site is south of the current Valdosta High School,\r\nacross Eastwind Road and a parking lot in land owned by the school system.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Solar<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAnd the site is only 2.5 miles by road or five minutes from the new Valdosta High School.\r\n

\r\nVBOE has been talking about this for some time.\r\nKimberly Cannon, Valdosta Daily Times, 26 Jan 2018,\r\n\r\nPinevale Elementary paid off<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\nSuperintendent Dr. Todd Cason provided the board an update on a\r\npossible solar project with Radiance Solar, which was discussed\r\nduring the October 2017 board meetings.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAs part of the project, Radiance Solar would pay to lease land from\r\nVCS and place solar arrays on the property then sell the power\r\ngenerated to Georgia Power as part of the Renewable Energy\r\nDevelopment Initiative program.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nDuring the Oct. 24, 2017, meeting, the board voted to give Radiance\r\nSolar the authority to submit a letter of intent application to\r\nGeorgia Power for two VCS properties, one for unused land at the\r\ntransportation department and one for unused land at Pinevale\r\nElementary.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nCason told the board during the Tuesday meeting the transportation\r\ndepartment property was selected.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“We could earn, for 25 years, $30,000 a year,” Cason said of the\r\npossible solar project.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nSo, what about the Lowndes County Board of Education,\r\nand all the other school systems round about?\r\nGot any unused land or rooftops you’d like to have earning solar income?\r\nWish I’d though of that, oh, five years ago<\/a>.\r\n\r\n
