\nLet’s not forget the failed concrete on which\n\nPlant Vogtle’s unprotected stranded reactor vessel<\/a> is supposed to sit.\n<\/p>\n

\nA week before\n\nthe reactor vessel train wreck,<\/a> news stories\nsaid concrete pouring was delayed due to “noncompliant rebar”.\nThomas Clements elaborated for the Aiken Leader 14 January 2013,\n\nVogtle AP1000 Nuclear Reactor Vessel Discovered Unprotected, Stranded in Savannah Port since December 15 Shipment Failure<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nDue to chronic delays in the pouring of \u201cnuclear\nconcrete\u201d for the basemat of the AP1000 units at Vogtle and VC\nSummer, it remains unknown when or if any reactor vessels can\nactually be placed into the excavated holes at the sites. A January\n10 meeting of the NRC confirmed that another basemat-related\n\u201clicense amendment request\u201d (LAR) was soon to be filed\nby SCE&G for its AP1000 project and that the target date for\ngranting of the LAR was March 18. It appears that the Vogtle project\nhas fallen behind the V.C. Summer project and no strategy for the\nfiling of a similar and necessary LAR by Southern Company is known.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n<\/a>\n<\/a>\nConcrete, the long-time bane of\n\nSeabrook Station<\/a>\nand also what’s keeping\n\nCrystal River<\/a> shut down because nobody wants to pay the\nbillions of dollars it would take to fix it.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\n<\/a>\nWhat say we call the whole thing off, like\nDominion Power did with its existing\n\nKewaunee nuke<\/a>,\nand\nTEPCO and NRG did\n\nwith their plans for new South Texas nukes<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nMaybe it’s a sign that meanwhile\n\nGoogle has invested a billion dollars in wind and solar<\/a> and gotten\n2 gigawatts of power, almost as much as the 2.2 GW the two new Vogtle nukes\nwere supposed to produce, except Google’s solar and wind projects\nare online on time, and for less than just the cost overruns at Vogtle.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Georgia legislature is in session.\nYou can contact\n\nyour legislator or the PSC<\/a> today\nabout\n\ntoppling Southern Company’s three-legged nuclear regulatory-capture stool<\/a>\nand\n\nfixing that 1973 Territoriality Law<\/a>\nso we can get on with solar and wind in Georgia,\nfor jobs and energy independence, and oh by the way clean air and\nplenty of clean\n\nwater<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n
