The regional transportation sales tax\r\nprocess is a mechanism for voters in the region to enact a regional\r\nsales tax for transportation purposes. The law allows a region to\r\nimplement a one percent sales tax to fund transportation projects,\r\nsuch as pavement maintenance, road construction, bridge, safety,\r\ntransit, aviation, bicycle, and pedestrian projects. This\r\nTransportation Sales Tax process began in the Southern Georgia\r\nregion in early 2017 when a majority of the counties within the\r\nSouthern Georgia region passed resolutions to initiate the process\r\nfor a regional transportation sales tax. Previously in 2012, voters\r\nin this region voted down a similar regional transportation sales\r\ntax.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nOver the past six months, The Executive Committee of the Roundtable\r\nhas met several times to select the projects presented in this draft\r\nlist. The Executive Committee reviewed each project and how it best\r\nmet the needs of the region, and worked to make sure the proceeds of\r\nthe sales tax are divided equitably throughout the region. The\r\nExecutive Committee selected 150 projects, totaling more than 296\r\nmillion dollars. These projects are located throughout the region\r\nand each county is represented by at least one project on the list.\r\nThis sales tax is estimated to generate more than 513 million\r\ndollars over the next 10 years for transportation purposes.\r\nTwenty-five percent of the proceeds or 128 million dollars will be\r\ndivided by formula to each city and county in the region. If the\r\nsales tax is passed by the voters, local jurisdictions will also see\r\na reduction in the match they pay on annual LMIG (Local Maintenance\r\nImprovement Grant) funds they received from the Georgia Department\r\nof Transportation from 30-percent to 10-percent, an additional\r\nsavings of more than 24 million dollars over 10 years to each city\r\nand county in the region.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nIn January, the following public meetings will be held so the public\r\ncan comment on the Draft Constrained Investment List.
