{"id":1951,"date":"2011-06-03T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-03T12:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/electing-local-councils.html"},"modified":"2011-06-03T08:15:00","modified_gmt":"2011-06-03T12:15:00","slug":"electing-local-councils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/electing-local-councils.html","title":{"rendered":"Electing Local Councils"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<\/a>\nRecently, there has been more interest and observation of some\nparts of local government by active citizens,\non topics ranging from\nthe\nanimal shelter<\/a>\nto\nbiomass<\/a>\nto\neducation<\/a>\nto\n\nfarmers markets<\/a>\nto\n\nfast food vs. neighborhoods<\/a>\nto\nprivate prisons<\/a>\nto\n\nthe Quitman 10<\/a>\nto\nsolar power<\/a>\nto\nT-SPLOST,<\/a>\nall in aid of\ntransparency.<\/a>\nEngaging elected and\nappointed officials in\n\ndialog<\/a> about the concerns and best interests\n\n<\/a>\nof the community\n\nhas been challenging.<\/a>\nYet we can see the sun a little clearer through the smoke.\n

\nEnsuring that people who will\nengage in dialog and seek the benefit of the entire community are\n\nappointed to boards<\/a> lies in the hands of the elected officials.\nElecting people who engage in dialog and seek the benefit of the\n\n\n\n<\/a>\nentire community raises the likelihood that elected officials\nwill appoint to boards people who want dialog.\nAlso, citizens must volunteer to\nparticipate on boards and authorities, making time in their schedules\nto voluntarily make our community better through transparent participation.\n

\nThis is a municipal election year,\nso many such seats on local municipal councils,\n\n<\/a>\nsuch as the Valdosta City Council, are up for election this year.\nHere’s\n\na list of every seat up for election.<\/a>\nIf you live in one of the local municipalities\n(Hahira, Dasher, Lake Park, Remerton, or Valdosta),\nconsider running.\nIf you don’t want to run, find out who is,\nand find out what their track record is,\nwhat they say they will do,\nand if they care what the community thinks.\nAnd don’t forget the Valdosta school board.\n

\n\n<\/a>\nLowndes school board elections are next year, along with County Commission\n(including two new seats and the chair),\nsheriff, judges, tax assessors, and tax collector.\nIt’s not too early to be thinking about who should run.\n

\n<\/a>\nNo matter who is appointed or elected, let’s watch them\nand keep track of what they do.\n
