But Arizona shows that\npopular wisdom might be wrong: Data there suggest that privately operated\nprisons can cost more to operate than state-run prisons \u2014 even though\nthey often steer clear of the sickest, costliest inmates.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat&#8217;s right, they leave we the taxpayers to pay more in public prisons\nto house the most expensive prisoners:\n<blockquote>\nThe research, by the Arizona Department of Corrections, also reveals a\nmurky aspect of private prisons that helps them appear less expensive:\nThey often house only relatively healthy inmates.\n<p>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s cherry-picking,&#8221; said State Representative Chad Campbell,\nleader of the House Democrats. &#8220;They leave the most expensive prisoners\nwith taxpayers and take the easy prisoners.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd yet private prisons still cost more.\n<p>\nCould it have something to do with their executive salaries?\n<p>\nAnyway, we don&#8217;t need a private prison in Lowndes County.\nSpend that tax money on education instead.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Richard A.
