Areva\nwill have a 66.65% stake and Niger 33.35%.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe mine will take an initial investment of \u20ac1.2 billion (US$1.67\nbillion) and will have an annual production of 5,000t for a period\nof 35 years. It will employ 1,400 people and start priduction in\n2010.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAreva will finance two-thirds of the amount.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt will make Niger the world&#8217;s second-biggest uranium producer after\nCanada.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/niger.areva.com\/EN\/niger-213\/imouraren.html\">\nAreva says<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nImouraren is thought to be one of the largest uranium deposits in\nthe world and operations are expected to last for more than 35\nyears. The mine will be the largest open-pit uranium mine in western\nAfrica and the second-largest reserve of uranium in the world, after\nOlympic Dam in Australia. It will establish Niger as the world&#8217;s\nsecond-ranking uranium supplier (after Kazakhstan) by doubling\ncurrent production.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/niger.areva.com\/EN\/niger-198\/areva-s-facilities-in-niger-cominak-somar-imouraren.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/niger.areva.com\/niger\/liblocal\/images\/Implantations\/BANDEAUEN.jpg\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOnly a few months ago,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/10\/11\/niger-uranium-areva-idUSL6E8LBNJV20121011\">\nthe government of Niger was complaining<\/a>\nAreva wasn&#8217;t mining fast enough.\nThis all indicates how important Areva&#8217;s Imouraren uranium mine is.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWho is Areva?\nAccording to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.areva.com\/EN\/group-1413\/in-france-nearly-80-of-the-electricity-is-of-nuclear-origin.html\">\nAreva&#8217;s website:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.areva.com\/EN\/group-1413\/in-france-nearly-80-of-the-electricity-is-of-nuclear-origin.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee780a56e970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee780a56e970d-pi.png\"    \/><\/a>\nAfter the first oil shock in 1973, France chose nuclear power to\ngain energy independence. Electricit\u00e9 de France (EDF) selected the\npressurized water reactor (PWR) technology, with AREVA as sole\nsupplier of the nuclear steam supply systems.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nToday, the country has attained self-sufficiency in terms of energy\nproduction. The rise in capacity of the French nuclear reactor fleet\nis the fruit of unshaken political determination, backed by a broad\nconsensus of public opinion. The result is a world record unequaled\nto this day.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFrance has 58 nuclear reactors currently in operation, producing\nnearly 80% of the country&#8217;s electricity. The French nuclear reactor\nfleet is composed of plants with 3 standardized generating\ncapacities: 900MW (34 units), 1300 MW (20 units) and 1450 MW (N4, 4\nunits).\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a funny kind of self-sufficiency that requires wars for fuel&#8230;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAreva&#8217;s claim that public opinion backs nuclear power in France\nwas true even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/03\/21\/us-france-nuclear-poll-idUSTRE72K2VI20110321\">shortly after Fukushima.<\/a>\nBut it is not so true any longer.\nFrance&#8217;s English-language newspaper Connexion reported 6 June 2011,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connexionfrance.com\/france-nuclear-power-survey-abandon-shut-reactors-germany-safety-fukushima-12776-view-article.html\">\nFrench want to abandon nuclear<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connexionfrance.com\/france-nuclear-power-survey-abandon-shut-reactors-germany-safety-fukushima-12776-view-article.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee780a579970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee780a579970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nThe Ifop poll of 1,005 adults commissioned by the Journal du\nDimanche found 77% supported a gradual shut-down of France&#8217;s nuclear\npower plants within 30 years.
