Improvements will include the addition of\na biomass boiler and a 40-megawatt turbine generator geared to reduce\nemergency cost and improve profitability, reports Macon Telegraph\nwebsite macon.com.\n<p>\nThe authority approved the deal on Monday for the provider of packaging\nfor food, beverage and consumer products. The biomass system, which\nis scheduled for operation by mid-2013, is expected to generate power\nfrom about 400,000 tons of logging materials, mostly the tops of trees,\nthe Macon newspaper reports. Graphic Packaging&#8217;s (NYSE: GPK) Macon mill\nmakes an estimated 1,600 tons of paperboard daily.\n<\/blockquote>\nMaybe we should put some <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/parameters-on-the-types-of-industry-vdt-editorial.html\">\nparameters on the types of industry<\/a> we want around here to avoid this\nhappening with the bonds the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority\n(and the Lowndes County Commission) floats.\n<p>\nThis rationalization is precious:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nThe new project will reduce the Macon mill&#8217;s fossil fuel-based greenhouse\ngas emissions by about 200,000 tons per year &#8212; the emissions equivalent\nof about 35,000 passenger cars, according to macon.com.\n<\/blockquote>\nYeah, by shifting the CO2 emissions to the biomass plant, not reducing them.\n<p>\nNonetheless, Graphic Packaging&#8217;s president and CEO, David Scheible,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/biomassmagazine.com\/articles\/5235\/biomass-will-power-georgia-paperboard-mill\">\nsaid back in January:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.krannert.purdue.edu\/events\/exec_forum\/schedules\/fall09.asp\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.krannert.purdue.edu\/events\/exec_forum\/images\/Fall2009\/DavidScheible.jpg\"><\/a>\n&#8220;This biomass project will not only make use of untapped renewable\nresources, but it will also add value to the Macon, Ga., community as\na whole.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nThis other quote from the same Biomass Magazine article is more interesting:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;The objectives of the biomass project are to further the company\u2019s\nsustainability strategy, reduce energy costs and to improve the\nprofitability of the Macon mill in advance of expected increases in\nelectricity costs,&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nWell of course, profitability of the Macon mill is the real goal.\nBut why do they expect increases in electricity costs?\nWhich existing source of electricity do they think will be shut down?\n<p>\nMeanwhile, in Lowndes County, remember,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/06\/sterling-planet-wants-to-buy-biomass-site.html\">it ain&#8217;t over &#8217;til it&#8217;s over.<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"How to get a biomass plant approved in Georgia: tack it onto an existing business.
