\nAccording to\nMari Herreras in\n\nTucson Weekly, 26 October 2010<\/a>,\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThe American Friends Service Committee, Private Corrections Working\nGroup, UA Latino Law Students Association, and St. Francis in the\nFoothills United Methodist Church have organized a series of private\nprison hearings across the state that kick off tomorrow in Tucson at\nPima Community College, Downtown Campus at 1255 N. Stone Ave., in the\nAmethyst Room from 6 to 8 p.m., moderated by yours truly, Mari Herreras.\n

\nThe public is invited to present testimony, but the AFSC has also invited\nrepresentatives from the Arizona Department of Corrections, Corrections\nCorporation of America (expected to build a new prison in Tucson) and\nManagement and Training Corporation (which manages the Marana Community\nCorrectional Treatment Facility). Word is no one has responded from those\norganizations, but AFSC organizers know the following presenters will\nbe there to provide critical information on the private prison industry:\nStephen Nathan, editor of Prison Privatization Report International; Joe\nGlen, spokesman for Maricopa and Pima Juvenile Corrections Associations;\nBrent White, UA law professor; Jim Sanders, real estate appraiser; Susan\nMaurer, retired corrections commissioner from New Jersey; and Victoria\nLopez, from ACLU of Arizona.\n

\nThe hearing will include the following community leaders who will hear\ntestimony and ask questions: Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias;\nTucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik; Assistant Tucson City Manager\nRichard Miranda; Representative Phil Lopes; and Mark Kimble, former\nassociate editor of the Tucson Citizen.\n<\/blockquote>\nThey even made sure both the basic positions and the actual\ndebate would be recorded:\n\n\n

\nIf you plan to attend and present testimony be sure to bring a copy\nof your remarks to enter into the record. The hearings will be video\nrecorded to present to the state Legislature and the governor.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nSomebody should be organizing this kind of actual debate right here\nright now in Lowndes County, Georgia, where the Industrial Authority\nwants to bring in a CCA private prison that will use tax money that\ncould go to education while CUEE is trying to ramrod school unification as a\nbandaid for education.\nI’m looking at you, Chamber of Commerce: you could organize such meetings.\nOr if you want, how about some churches?\n
