\r\nAt the time, Andrew was the costliest hurricane in U.S. history with\r\ndamages of $26.5 billion in 1992 dollars (about $50 billion in\r\ncurrent dollars), according to the National Weather Service.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The effect of Irma on the state of Florida is going to be much\r\ngreater than Andrew’s effect,” said\r\n\r\n Weather Channel senior hurricane\r\nspecialist Bryan Norcross, who was a local television meteorologist\r\nhailed as a hero during Andrew. “We’re dealing with an entirely\r\ndifferent level of phenomenon. There is no storm to compare with\r\nthis. Unless you go way back to 1926.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Hurricane Andrew demolished Homestead Air Force Base<\/a> near Miami,\r\nnow known as Homestead Air Reserve Base after much of its operations\r\nmoved to Moody Air Force Base near Valdosta, Georgia.\r\n

\r\nMoody AFB closed yesterday<\/a>\r\nahead of Hurricane Irma.\r\nI live about three miles from Moody, and I could hear them flying out planes\r\nfor days.\r\nMany of the planes and copters \r\nColumbus Air Force Base, Miss.<\/a>.\r\nMoody says:\r\n

\r\nThe aircraft and rescue assets will remain at Columbus before\r\nre-engaging with other Moody assets to assist the Federal Emergency\r\nManagement Agency and other first responder agencies during upcoming\r\nHurricane Irma relief operations in the Southeast region.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nMakes more sense than leaving planes sitting on the ground at Moody\r\nduring a hurricane.\r\n
