But there is growing evidence an\nincreasing number of local and state officials have tired of playing an\nabusive and costly anti-immigration game they don&#8217;t believe in.\n<p>\nTwo weeks ago, Gov. Cuomo pulled New York State from the Secure\nCommunities federal deportation program, following Illinois Gov. Pat\nQuinn who had done the same weeks before. And days after Cuomo&#8217;s decision\nMassachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick took the same courageous step. All\nthree governors are Democrats and strong allies of President Obama.\n<p>\nThey had plenty of reasons to quit the controversial Department of\nHomeland Security program. Promoted as a tool to deport undocumented\nimmigrants convicted of serious crimes, in reality Secure Communities\ntargets mostly low-level offenders or those never convicted of any crime\nat all.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd who benefits by arresting such people?\nPrivate prison companies, which hold the new prisoners.\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s not just northeast state, either.\nHere&#8217;s a city and state on the frontline of immigration, Los Angeles, California:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scpr.org\/news\/2011\/02\/12\/bernard-parks-member-city-council\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/media.scpr.org\/images\/2011\/02\/01\/Pars-B-sidebar.jpg\"><\/a>\nLast week, the Los Angeles City Council called for the city to opt\nout of Secure Communities, and on Friday California Congress members\nXavier Becerra, Lucille Roybal-Allard, Judy Chu and Bernard Parks\nasked Gov. Jerry Brown to suspend California&#8217;s participation in the\nprogram. Their main concern is the program&#8217;s effect on the reporting\nof crime by victims and witnesses in immigrant communities. The four\nlegislators are also Democrats and Obama supporters.\n<\/blockquote>\nGeorgia doesn&#8217;t have to keep falling for ALEC&#8217;s scaremongering\nfor the benefit of private prison companies.\n<p>\nWe don&#8217;t need a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.\nSpend those tax dollars on education instead.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Probably everybody has heard that Alabama followed Georgia down the Arizona lock-&#8217;em-up anti-immigration path.
