{"id":18929,"date":"2017-08-17T11:09:46","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T15:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=18929"},"modified":"2017-08-17T11:10:40","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T15:10:40","slug":"no-coal-ash-on-a-dozen-years-of-dsswa-agendas-but-brooks-county-landfill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2017\/08\/no-coal-ash-on-a-dozen-years-of-dsswa-agendas-but-brooks-county-landfill.html","title":{"rendered":"No coal ash on a dozen years of DSSWA agendas (but Brooks County Landfill)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nIn agendas for the governmental group which supposedly has oversight of the landfill in Lowndes County, Georgia,\r\nthere is no mention at all of coal or coal ash.\r\nThanks to Julia Shewchuck of SGRC, those agendas\r\nfor the Deep South Solid Waste Authority (DSSWA)\r\nare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/\">on the LAKE website<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n<a title=\"April 18, 2007 Agenda\" name=\"Agendas:April-18-2007-Agenda\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2007-04-18--Agenda--4-18-07-Meeting-0001.html\"><img decoding=\"async\"  style=\"float:right;border:none;width:200px\"    src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/small\/2007-04-18--Agenda--4-18-07-Meeting-0001.jpg\"  alt=\"[April 18, 2007 Agenda]\"><\/a>\r\nBack in 2006 the proposed\r\nBrooks County Landfill\r\nis on the\r\nthe proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2006-04-19--Agenda--4-19-06-Meeting.pdf\">April 19, 2006 agenda<\/a>,\r\nand \r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2006-06-21--Agenda--6-21-06-Meeting.pdf\">\r\nthe June 21, 2006 agenda<\/a>\r\nsaid there was\r\na public hearing June 29, 2006.\r\nAn update was on the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2006-10-18--Agenda--10-18-06-Meeting.pdf\">October 18, 2016 agenda<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n2007 starts with one meeting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2007-01-17--Agenda--1-17-07-Meeting.pdf\">no mention of the landfill<\/a>,\r\nbut the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2007-04-18--Agenda--4-18-07-Meeting.pdf\">April 18, 2007 meeting<\/a> has\r\n&ldquo;5. Discussion of Onyx\/Langdale Proposed Land Swap&rdquo;.\r\nI don&#8217;t see any further mention of the Brooks County landfill\r\nafter that, and apparently it never happened.\r\n<p>\r\nCuriously, these mentions of the Brooks County Landfill on the DSSWA agenda\r\nare all months after these VDT stories:<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\nKenna Walsh, 15 February 2006,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/local_news\/hundreds-protest-proposed-landfill\/article_6a4a60b3-a58f-5b8e-8765-c81a6cd05513.html\">\r\nHundreds protest proposed landfill,<\/a>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nQUITMAN&mdash;More than 300 fired-up citizens filled the Brooks\r\nCounty Courthouse Monday evening to protest a zoning amendment that\r\nwould allow a cross-jurisdictional landfill four miles east of\r\nQuitman off U.S. 84.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThose citizens who couldn&#8217;t fit into the second floor&#8217;s 240 maximum\r\nseating area chanted on the courthouse steps &ldquo;No dump! No\r\ndump! No dump!&rdquo;&#8230;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;We shouldn&#8217;t sell the birthright of our children that is\r\ndisguised as a garbage truck with a pot of money on it,&rdquo; said\r\nSuperior Court Judge Arthur McLane, who came to the meeting as a\r\nconcerned citizen.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nLikening the fight against big industry to the Biblical story of\r\nDavid and Goliath, McLane said the county should keep the land\r\nhealthy for future generations.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAustin Peele, a lawyer representing the Nestle Company, said the\r\nlandfill may affect the Deer Park bottled water operations if\r\nchemicals leak into the water.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nPeele said Nestle, which has $200 million invested in the Deer Park\r\noperation, has &#8220;grave concerns&#8221; over potential contamination.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe Brooks County Commission tabled the item.\r\n<li>\r\nKenna Walsh, February 21, 2006,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/local_news\/landfill-proposition-withdrawn-from-brooks\/article_a2a24d33-e27d-5729-9946-8ae7e8feeeae.html\">\r\nLandfill proposition withdrawn from Brooks<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nQUITMAN &mdash; Brooks County residents are breathing a sigh of\r\nrelief &mdash; and fresh air &mdash; today as a proposal that could\r\nhave allowed a multi-jurisdictional landfill was withdrawn Monday\r\nevening during the Brooks County Commission&#8217;s second monthly\r\nmeeting.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn a letter from the landfill&#8217;s parent company, Onyx Waste Services,\r\nInc., the request for commissioners to amend a current zoning\r\nordinance to allow a multi-jurisdictional landfill was formally\r\nwithdrawn. The amendment would have allowed other cities and states\r\nto dump garbage in Brooks County.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe interested company, Onyx, wanted to place the landfill on a\r\n700-plus acre site behind the Langboard Plant, about four miles east\r\nof the City of Quitman. Methane gas extracted from the landfill\r\nwould have assisted in the plant&#8217;s productions.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nCommission Chairman Wayne Carroll said the item was withdrawn at the\r\nrequest of the company&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nI wonder if people in Brooks County knew the DSSWA continued to\r\ndiscuss that Brooks County landfill site for a year.\r\n<p>\r\nMore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2017\/03\/deep-south-solid-waste-management-authority-after-privatized-landfill.html\">in a previous post<\/a> about privatization of the landfill, which makes it very difficult to get information directly from its current owner, Advanced Disposal Services (ADS), leaving DSSWA as the most likely route to find out anything about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/landfill-pcb-violation.html\">PCBs<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/08\/toxic-waste-coal-ash-in-alabama-and-georgia-landfills.html\">coal ash<\/a>, and who knows what else in that landfill. People asking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2017\/03\/videos-sewage-coal-ash-historic-preservation-a-dead-cat-and-turkeys-vcc-2016-03-09.html#N-7-CTBH-JD-Rice-on-what-toxic-waste-is-in-landfill\">the Valdosta City Council<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2017\/03\/videos-coal-ash-calles-val-north-pd-water-sewer-habitat-cdbg-sewage-valves-stone-creek-antenna-sheriff-alcohol-lcc-2017-03-14.html#N-8-CWTBH-Gretchen-Quarterman-on-Coal-Ash\">Lowndes County Commission<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/vdt-should-dig-deeper-into-county-trash.html\">more than four years now<\/a> has produced no information.\r\n<p>\r\nRecent agendas are mostly about the DSSWA grant program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2017\/04\/agenda-deep-south-regional-municipal-solid-waste-management-authority-2017-04-19.html\">to its own local governmental members<\/a>, such as these items from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/dsswa\/agendas\/2017-04-19--DSSWA-Agenda--04192017.pdf\">April 19, 2017<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<ol start=\"4\">\r\n<li> Approval of Royalty Disbursement for the period July 2016 to\r\nDecember 2016\r\n<li> Local Government Grant Program&mdash;Magic of Recycling Grant\r\n2014 &amp; 2015 Re-Authorization\r\n<li> Local Government Grant Program &mdash; City of Valdosta Litter\r\nControl\r\n<li> Local Government Grant Program &mdash; Lanier County Passenger\r\nVan Purchase\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAs near as I can tell DSSWA meets again 6PM October 18, 2017 at\r\nthe Southern Georgia Regional Commission (SGRC),\r\n327 W.
