The\nbrief was filed by the law firm of Rohan Law, P.C. GALEO filed the brief\nin an effort to protect constitutional and civil rights of Georgians.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.galeo.org\/story.php?story_id=0000008100\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.galeo.org\/images\/geleo_exec_dir_08-04.jpg\"><\/a>\n&#8220;This law will adversely impact our state by creating a state-law system\nfor the regulation of immigration and immigration enforcement. This new\nscheme by the state is not only unconstitutional but will also encourage\negregious violations of rights of Georgia&#8217;s residents and visitors,&#8221;\nsaid Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO.\n<p>\nGALEO believes that HB87 will disproportionately harm certain communities\nof color and would also encourage racial profiling. Enforcement of HB87\ncannot be accomplished in a race-neutral fashion. Additionally, there\nare serious concerns of local law enforcement officials being unequipped\nto enforce HB87.\n<p>\nHB87 also threatens public safety in Georgia. By placing law enforcement\nofficials in the position to enforce a broken immigration policy, HB87\nwill instill fear and mistrust in Georgia&#8217;s communities of color and\ndrastically chill the reporting of crime and cooperation in criminal\ninvestigations by minorities. This erosion of trust would undermine\npublic safety efforts for all Georgians.\n<\/blockquote>\nOf course, the Georgia plan is to turn it into private safety anyway,\nby privatizing prisons for private profit of a few at taxpayer expense.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Jane Osborn notes: More on the lawsuit filed to overturn HB87 that has scared the farmworkers out of state.
