\r\nThey moved the meeting half an hour earlier, to 8AM.\r\nGretchen, who is signed up to the county’s alert system yet never got any alert about this time change,\r\ngot there at the usual time and it was over already.\r\nIt’s listed in their calendar as “8:00 AM – 8:35 AM”<\/a> but she got there\r\nwith the LAKE camera before 8:30 and it was already over.\r\n

\r\nAnd on the agenda<\/a>:\r\ntwo county appointments for the same Hospital Authority that hired a CEO for five years,\r\nfired him without cause after two years, and now:\r\n\r\n\r\nJohn Stephen, VDT, 6 July 2017, Former hospital CEO getting $2 million in severance:\r\nSeverance pays salary for 3 years<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nTwo appointments are expiring, and the Hospital Authority Chair\r\nhas supplied “in no particular order” three candidates for each\r\nwith the same two names listed first for each,\r\naccording to the document<\/a> linked into that agenda item:\r\n

\r\nHISTORY, FACTS AND ISSUES: The appointment of Mr. Cameron Hickman to\r\nthe Hospital Authority of Valdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia, will\r\nexpire on August 1, 2017. Sam Allen, Chairman, has submitted three\r\ncandidates to fill the vacancy. Their names are listed, in no\r\nparticular order, for the Commission to consider appointing.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

    \r\nThe appointment of Dr. John Roan to the Hospital Authority of\r\nValdosta and Lowndes County, Georgia, will\r\nexpire on August 1, 2017. Dr. Roan has expressed interest in being\r\nreappointed. Sam Allen, Chairman, has submitted three candidates,\r\nincluding Dr. Roan, to fill the vacancy. Their names are listed, in\r\nno particular order, for the Commission to consider appointing.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

      \r\nWhen they vote tomorrow evening at 5:30 PM, will the Lowndes County Commission\r\ntake the pretty obvious hint from the Hospital Authority and appoint\r\nMr. Jason Wisenbaker and\r\nDr. Carly Thomas?\r\nOr will they reappoint Dr. John Roan who was on the same Authority when\r\nit made that disastrous CEO hire?\r\nNot very good options.\r\n

      \r\nCorrection:<\/strong> Dr. John D. Roan was appointed by the Lowndes County Commission January 26, 2016<\/a> to fill out the unexpired term of Dr. Lynne Feldman, who resigned<\/a>.\r\nHowever, the county’s website has Dr. Roan’s term as expiring “2\/1\/21”<\/a>, so either that web page is wrong and somebody would fix it, or it makes no sense to appoint him to fill out somebody else’s term, which would merely leave his current term unfilled.\r\nThe City of Valdosta’s web page on the Hospital Authority says “Dr. John Roan – Term Expires 08\/01\/17”<\/a>.\r\nThe Hospital Authority’s own website does not say when any of the terms expire<\/a>.\r\nAlso, has anybody asked any of the other candidates whether they’re even willing to serve?\r\n

      \r\nAnd this morning they discussed them with nobody watching.\r\n

      \r\nThe Hospital Authority itself meets at 8AM on “The third Wednesday of each calendar month”<\/a>,\r\nwhich will be July 19, 2017, at “The Executive Boardroom of South Georgia Medical Center, located at 2501 North Patterson Street, Valdosta, Georgia 31602”.\r\nThe VDT sicced the Georgia Attorney General on that same Authority\r\nabout those same meetings:\r\nStuart Taylor, VDT, 3 March 2016,\r\n\r\nHospital admits violation:\r\nAttorney General gives 10 days for response<\/a>.\r\nApparently their response was not satisfactory:\r\nJennifer Dandron, VDT, 30 March 2016 ,\r\nAttorney General fines Hospital Authority:\r\nOpen Government training ordered<\/a>.\r\nThen this happened:\r\nJason Smith, VDT, 23 September 2016,\r\n\r\nNo Confidence: City calls for hospital authority resignations<\/a>.\r\nThe Valdosta City Council did that, but I don’t recall the Lowndes County Commission ever saying a word about the misdeeds of the Hospital Authority.\r\n

      \r\nDid we just see another Lowndes County body\r\nemulate the Hospital Authority and violate the Georgia Open Meetings Law?\r\nEven if the Lowndes County Commission was technically legal in its time change,\r\nit sure looks like they didn’t want the public to see them considering\r\nHospital Authority apppointments.\r\n

      \r\nHere’s the Lowndes County Commission agenda<\/a>,\r\nwhich currently says they vote at 5:30 PM Tuesday evening.\r\nBetter check their calendar before you go to be sure they haven’t changed that time, too.\r\nIt also says for\r\n\r\nParks and Rec<\/a> the terms are expiring for Mrs. Suzan Prince\r\nand for\r\nAshley Paulk: he was reappointed after he was no longer County Chairman and before he became Sheriff again.\r\nThe document<\/a> says Ms. Prince wishes to be reappointed, but deponent saith not in re Sheriff Paulk.\r\nIf I recall correctly, last time his term expired, they also didn’t have a name proposed, so they laughed nervously and reappointed him.\r\nMaybe you’ll get to see what they do tomorrow evening, if they don’t change that time, too.\r\n
