\nCommunity gardeners’ wait is over – after 3 years, Council OKs leases<\/a><\/p>\n

\nGardeners are ready to “get dirty” following Tuesday’s Common Council
\npassage of long-awaited leases to turn 34 vacant city-owned lots into
\nneighborhood oases.<\/p>\n

\nLawmakers approved the leases unanimously and without debate. Some
\ncommunity gardeners have been eagerly awaiting the action for three years.<\/p>\n

\nMayor Byron W. Brown’s administration delayed submitting the master leases
\nbecause of numerous concerns. The logjam ended late last week when city
\nplanners sent the proposed agreements to the Council for final action.<\/p>\n

\n“We have our insurance signed up, so we’ll<\/p>\n


\n
\n<\/a>
\nhave everything covered under
\nour liability insurance as of tomorrow morning,” said Susannah S. Barton,
\nexecutive director of Grassroots Gardens, a not-for-profit group that
\nfacilitates leases for block clubs and community organizations. “Now
\nI’m going to go call people and share the good news. And we’re going to
\nstart gardening tomorrow.”<\/p>\n

\nFor the first time, the city has assigned a staff member to work closely
\nwith Grassroots Gardens.<\/p>\n

\n“We’ll be working with the community planner to help improve our process,”
\nBarton said.<\/p>\n

\nShe added that the city will be involved in vetting applications for
\nnew gardens.<\/p>\n

\n“We really welcome the involvement and the interest from the city. We
\nthink it’s something really important,” Barton said.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
