According to Russell Hoffman,\none of California&#8217;s leading experts on San Onofre, inferior metals\nand major design failures turned what was meant to be an upgrade\ninto an utter fiasco.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nInstalled by Mitsubishi, the generators simply did not work. When\nthey were shut nearly a year ago, tubes were leaking, banging\ntogether and overall rendering further operations impossible.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSouthern California Edison and San Diego Gas &amp; Electric have\nunofficially thrown in the towel on Unit 3. But they&#8217;re lobbying\nhard to get at least Unit 2 back up and running. Their technical\nproblems are so serious that they&#8217;ve asked the Nuclear Regulatory\nCommission to let them run Unit 2 at 70% capacity. In essence, they\nwant to \u201csee what happens\u201d without daring to take the\nreactor to full power.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe NRC has expressed serious doubts.  On December 26 it demanded\nanswers to more than 30 questions about the plant&#8217;s technical realities.\nThere have been assertions that unless San Onofre can be shown as operable\nat full power, its license should be negated.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s good the NRC got around to doing something, after\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/nrc-says-its-never-been-a-practice-to-show-licensee-documents-to-the-public.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee7a31268970d\" src=\"http:\/\/i3.ytimg.com\/vi\/RXYFdLo-ch4\/mqdefault.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nit\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/nrc-says-its-never-been-a-practice-to-show-licensee-documents-to-the-public.html\">\nrefused to show the public<\/a>\nthe licensee documents in which\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/nrc-doesnt-publish-nuclear-licensing-documents.html\">\nsupposedly the licensees documented some experimental data.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen <a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/centralized-nuclear-bad-investment.html\">\neven Forbes wonders whether nuclear is a bad investment,<\/a>\nwhy not\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/san-onofre-nuke-might-restart-why-not-solar-and-wind-instead.html\">\nsolar and wind instead?<\/a>\nThat&#8217;s what\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/2-gigawatts-of-wind-power-off-fukushima-plus-solar.html\">\nTEPCO is doing instead of the broken Fukushima nuclear reactors.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThere&#8217;s much more in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/environment\/showdown-san-onofre-why-nuclear-industry-may-be-dealt-big-blow\">\nthe article,<\/a> like this:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThe only real reason San Onofre&#8217;s owners want to get it back up is\nto charge the ratepayers for their failed repairs.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIn Georgia,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/southern-companys-three-legged-nuclear-regulatory-capture-stool.html\">\nGeorgia Power is charging customers\neven before the new nukes are built<\/a>,\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/we-can-charge-you-even-if-its-cancelled-cwipped-georgia-power.html\">\ncan keep charging even if they&#8217;re cancelled!<\/a>\nUnless we convince the legislature or the PSC to change that.\nLegislature&#8217;s in session right now!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"California only has a couple of nuclear reactor locations (unlike the 32 reactors within 500 miles of here), and one is in even worse shape than the other: San Onofre, almost as bad as Crystal River.
