{"id":1853,"date":"2011-06-24T14:41:19","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T18:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/solarcity-does-everything-will-arnold-of-solarcity.html"},"modified":"2011-06-24T14:41:19","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T18:41:19","slug":"solarcity-does-everything-will-arnold-of-solarcity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/solarcity-does-everything-will-arnold-of-solarcity.html","title":{"rendered":"SolarCity does everything &mdash;Will Arnold of SolarCity"},"content":{"rendered":"Will Arnold spends a lot of time in Toronto for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarcity.com\/media-center\/management-team.aspx\">\nSolarCity<\/a>\nbut he came to Atlanta to talk to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/06\/last-day-for-advance-rate-at-solar-summit.html\">\nSouthern Solar Summit<\/a>.\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.californiabytes.com\/2010\/07\/19\/eco-friendly-menlo-park-festival\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.californiabytes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/solarcity-300x225.jpg\"><\/a>\nSolarCity does\neverything from financing to design, installation, monitoring, and maintenance.\n<p>\nSolarCity&#8217;s founders are all IT people.\nThe most famous is perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarcity.com\/media-center\/management-team.aspx\">Elon Musk<\/a>, who also founded Paypal and SpaceX.\nTwo other co-founders sold their previous company to Dell,\nand SolarCity just got a <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/06\/solarcity-gets-big-investment-from-google.html\">\n$280 million investment from Google.<\/a>\nI&#8217;ve been comparing the solar market now to Silicon Valley 20 years ago,\nbecause of how fast it&#8217;s growing, how pragmatic and experimental it is,\nand the general attitude of the people.\nIt turns out in SolarCity it <em>is<\/em> Silicon Valley.\n<p>\nWill Arnold talked a lot about state incentives that sometimes seemed\nperpetually going to be solidified soon or other regulatory whims.\n<p>\nHe remarked that SolarCity&#8217;s leases were predicated on people\n\n<!--more-->\nwanting\nsolar but not wanting to pay for it up front.\nFor that to work, there needs to be regular income right along to\npay back SolarCity.\nThat and optimize cost relative to the price of panels.\nHe showed a chart showing solar industry growth had produced steadily\nfalling prices.\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/solar-power\/2011-06-09-solar-getting-cheaper-fast\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"500\"\nheight=\"377\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/phpThumb\/phpThumb.php?src=http:\/\/www.grist.org\/i\/assets\/lacey-solarsteadingfallingprices.jpg&#038;w=630\"><\/a>\n<p>\nSolarCity eliminates more costs via carefully designed financing packages.\n<p>\nSolarCity is already operating in half a dozen U.S. states plus Ontario.\nMaybe it will start in Georgia soon.\nOr maybe somebody else will pick up the piece everyone else is avoiding: finance.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Will Arnold spends a lot of time in Toronto for SolarCity but he came to Atlanta to talk to Southern Solar Summit.
