\nThe Mid-South Peace and Justice Center is organizing\n\na broad coalition against private prisons in Shelby County, Tennessee:<\/a>\n

\n\n<\/a>\n
\nNo Private Prisons\n<\/center>\nThe Shelby County Commission is in the process of trying to privatize\nour criminal justice system. Private prisons have a well-documented\nhistory of inefficient security, poorly trained and underpaid workers,\nhigh turnover rates, scant benefits and unprofessional and unsupervised\ntreatment of inmates.\n

\nThe Coalition Against Private Prisons has been created to fight this\nprivatization plan. So far this coalition involves Grassroots Leadership,\nthe Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, the AFSCME local 1733, Shelby\nCounty Corrections Officers, Women\u2019s Action Coalition, Mid-South\nInterfaith Network, educators, faith leaders, artists, and activists.\n

\nTo address this we are working with our coalition partners and other\ncommunity organizations to educate Memphians about the dangers of\nprivatization, and to mobilize Memphians around the issue. <\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\nThey’ve got a report,\n\nProgress or Profit? Positive Alternatives To Privatization and Incarceration in Shelby County, Tennessee.<\/a>\n\n\n

\nIt proposes a set of solutions that will help the county cut spending\nand reduce its jail population while continuing to protect public safety.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd a \nvideo documentary.<\/a>\n
\nCorruption and collusion are nothing new for private prisons, but with\nback-room boosts from the Department of Homeland Security, the stakes\nare getting higher. \nWe don’t need a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.\nSPend that tax money on rehabilitation and education instead.\n
