Shoichet wrote for CNN 28 June 2011 about Paul Bridges,\nmayor of Uvalde,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/US\/06\/28\/immigration.georgia.mayor\/index.html?\nhpt=hp_c1\">\nRepublican mayor in the South becomes unlikely advocate for immigrants<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/US\/06\/28\/immigration.georgia.mayor\/index.html?\nhpt=hp_c1\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/i.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/2011\/US\/06\/28\/immi\ngration.georgia.mayor\/story.paul.bridges.02.cnn.jpg\"><\/a>\nBridges is waging a deeply personal battle.\n<p>\nEnforcement of the Georgia law could put him in prison and tear apart\nthe families of some of his closest friends.\n<\/blockquote>\nHe thinks Governor Nathan Deal got it wrong when he signed HB 87:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nBridges says Deal is &#8220;fanning anti-immigrant sentiment without facts.&#8221;\n<p>\n&#8220;The immigrant community is a big part of the economy of Georgia,&#8221;\nhe says. &#8220;These people earn money and pay taxes just like the rest of us.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nHe doesn&#8217;t limit his responsibilities to U.S. citizens.\n<blockquote>\nBut he sees his responsibility &#8212; to serve the town&#8217;s &#8220;citizens&#8221; &#8212;\na little differently than most mayors. For him, that term has nothing\nto do with passports or residency papers.\n<p>\n&#8220;When I became mayor, I decided I was going to be the mayor for everybody,\nincluding people who have no voice otherwise.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd not just for everybody in Uvalde:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;If we don&#8217;t stop it in Georgia, all the other states are going to follow\nsuit,&#8221; he said.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWe can do the right thing here in Lowndes County by rejecting\na private prison that would only profit a private prison company\nat the expense of local farmers and we the taxpayers.\nSpend that tax money on rehabilitation and education instead.\n<p>\n-jsq\n<p>\nPS: Owed to Miles Cliatt.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sometimes somebody does the right thing not for fear or favor, just because it&#8217;s the right thing.
