CTBH - John Quarterman on Florida Resolutions about wastewater overflows\r\n    \" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/FPBlVsEzTtw\/hqdefault.jpg?custom=true&#038;w=120&#038;h=90&#038;jpg444=true&#038;jpgq=90&#038;sp=68&#038;sigh=l-VH4KJWI8QmXfI8PDvZBE2pp3M\"><\/a>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FPBlVsEzTtw&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiFwH4qgjVqTmC8LBo8yMEkd&#038;index=13\">Video.<\/a>\r\nI handed out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2017\/03\/09\/requesting-protection-of-suwannee-river-from-valdosta-wastewater-levy-bocc-2017-03-07\/\">Suwannee County resolution<\/a>,\r\nand pointed out I had nothing to do with getting that one passed,\r\nnor the ones from the other six downstream counties:\r\nI was just collecting them and talking to the Council about them.\r\nI pointed out the part on page 2 about:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWHEREAS, yet again, on January 22, 2017, the City of Valdosta had another failure resulting in the release of million gallons of raw sewage and contaminated stormwater into the Withlacoochee River which again resulted in the Florida Department of Health issuing public health advisories warning the public of wastewater contamination in the Withlacoochee River and portions of the Historic Suwannee River, which resulted in warnings being posted at all public access areas along the rivers stating that the rivers were not safe for recreational use and every precaution should be taken to avoid any contact with the river; and \r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nI pointed out that people stop using the rivers when they see such\r\nwarnings, and that&#8217;s a serious problem for those counties.\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nI suggested that if Florida wants to do something,\r\nit could institute and pay for regular water quality monitoring\r\nup and down the rivers in Florida,\r\nnot just when there was a spill.\r\nI also suggested Valdosta could organize independent third-party\r\nwater quality monitoring, not even overseen by Valdosta.\r\nI was enumerating how many Florida counties had passed\r\nresolutions when the Mayor brought down his gavel at three minutes.\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nThe Mayor&#8217;s response verbatim:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAll right your three minutes are up.\r\nI will answer one question.\r\nI know this might surprise you, but we are monitoring that situation\r\ncontinuously right now.\r\nAnd all it does is prove that we are right.\r\nThe water that comes from the north end of the county is dirtier\r\nthan water that leaves the wastewater treatment plant are.\r\nNow, when that water gets to the county, to the state line down there,\r\nit&#8217;s picked up, as you can imagine, fertilizer, animal feces, and all that.\r\nAnd by the time it gets to the state line it&#8217;s dirtier than it is,\r\nmuch dirtier,\r\nthan when it leaves our plant.\r\n<p>\r\nSo we&#8217;re doing everything we can, John, to make sure that we have all\r\nour information correct.\r\nWe&#8217;re monitoring that situation.\r\n[inaudble sentence due to someone coughing.]\r\nWe&#8217;ll be glad to furnish you with the facts.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nI responded that I understood that, but they were told last summer that\r\nthe problem had been fixed, and then it wasn&#8217;t.\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWe haven&#8217;t had any spills.\r\nWe had the one problem with the new plant, and it was not our fault.\r\nWe spent $58 million on that plant, and the people that designed it and\r\nbuilt it were at fault and they corrected it, so there&#8217;s not going to be another problem.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nI told him &#8220;I applaud your efforts. I&#8217;m just pointing out there&#8217;s\r\na credibility problem downstream. I made suggestions&#8230;\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThey like to blame somebody else, that&#8217;s for sure.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nI just laughed and said thank you.
