\nA landowner asked Lowndes County to abandon a road leading to the Alapaha\nRiver,\nin this morning’s\nLowndes County Commission Work Session.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>\n\nAbandonment of a portion of Old State Road (CR 16) <\/a>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nPhillip Connell requests that Old State Road that goes through his\nproperty and dead ends at the river be closed.\n<\/p>\n

\nThey’re holding an initial hearing followed by a public hearing “I guess it will be in three weeks at the next regular meeting”\n\n<\/a>\nbecause state law requires it, according to County Engineer Mike Fletcher.\nHe also said the bridge had washed away, and there was no access into\nLanier County.\nAnd the river (it’s the Alapaha River, although I don’t think anybody ever\nsaid the name)\n

\n…is not classified as a navigable waterway; therefore Mr. Connell\nowns to the center of the river.\nYou can navigate down the river by boat,\nbut if you step out,\nif you get out of the boat and step on the land,\nyou’re considered to be trespassing.\n<\/blockquote>\nEngineer did not cite any statutes for his assertions.\n<\/p>\n

\nChairman said he and Commissioners Marshall and Evans\nhad been down\n\n\nto the site and talked with Mr. Connell,\nwho said he was concerned about trespass, littering, and abuse\nof his property.\nCommissioners’ concerns included continued access to all the people\nwho currently had access.\nLandownder said he’d do that except for those who were unruly.\n<\/p>
