{"id":1809,"date":"2011-07-01T17:24:23","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T21:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/hispanics-and-farmers-strike-in-moultrie.html"},"modified":"2011-07-01T17:24:23","modified_gmt":"2011-07-01T21:24:23","slug":"hispanics-and-farmers-strike-in-moultrie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/hispanics-and-farmers-strike-in-moultrie.html","title":{"rendered":"Hispanics and farmers strike in Moultrie"},"content":{"rendered":"Alan Mauldin wrote for the Moultrie Observer 29 June 2011,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/moultrieobserver.com\/local\/x1435407607\/Stay-at-home-protest\">\nStay-at-home protest:\nLatinos hope to show their impact<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crrel.usace.army.mil\/ierd\/icejam\/icejam.htm\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.crrel.usace.army.mil\/ierd\/icejam\/nstatue.gif\"><\/a>\nColquitt County\u2019s Latino community is gearing up to make its presence\nknown by, well, disappearing, at least as much as possible for the\nlargest minority group.\n<p>\nOn Friday, the day a strict new immigration law takes effect, many will\nstay home from work and refrain from shopping to help make others aware\nof the impact of their contributions in the county.\n<\/blockquote>\nIt&#8217;s not just workers participating:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nWith many farmers on board with the Friday boycott, Garza said that many\npeople have been encouraged to participate in the boycott and attend\nthe rally.\n<p>\nColquitt County vegetable grower Kenny Bennett, who sponsored one of\nthe buses making the trip on Saturday, said that Hispanics have a large\nbase of support among farmers for the boycott even though it will cost\nthem money from the loss of labor that day.\n<p>\n\u201cWe\u2019re backing it 100 percent,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish they\u2019d do it\nnational. The average person does not realize how important the Hispanics\nare. Everything they eat all over this country is put up by them. The\ngeneral public doesn\u2019t know how important they are.\u201d\n<p>\nWithout migrant labor, Bennett said that American fruit and vegetable\nproduction would shift to countries south of the U.S. border and prices\nwould jump significantly. Those countries also allow the use of pesticides\nbanned here.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe bottom line:\n<blockquote>\n\u201cThey pay taxes,\u201d he said. \u201cThey pay Social Security, they pay\nincome taxes. When they pay Social Security they don\u2019t get that back,\nwe use that money and go to war with it. It\u2019s free money.\n<p>\n\u201cIf you deport these people, you need to pull the Statue of Liberty\nout of the water. This country was built on immigrants.
