\nA year ago, on 29 July 2010,\n\nLetter to Secretary Napolitano\nCalling for an End to ICE\/Local Police Collaboration\nand a Halt to Expansion of Immigration Detention System<\/a>:\n

\n\n<\/a>\nOn the occasion of the scheduled implementation of Arizona\u2019s racial\nprofiling law, SB 1070, veterans of the civil rights movement and\nrepresentatives of social justice and faith-based community organizations\nin Georgia today issued a letter to the Department of Homeland Security\nSecretary Napolitano, calling on her to put an end to 287(g) and\nother ICE-local police collaborations which lead to racial profiling\nand separation of families, and halt the expansion of the inhumane,\nprofit-driven immigration detention system.\n

\n\u201cAs veterans of the civil rights movement and representatives of\nsocial-justice and faith-based organizations in Georgia, we urge\nyou to take the bold steps necessary to end this unjust system that\ncreates divided families and improbable prisoners,\u201d says the letter.\nSignatories of the letter include: Constance Curry, a veteran of the\ncivil rights movement and Atlanta-based writer and activist; Edward\nDubose, President of the Georgia State Conference NAACP; Ajamu Baraka,\nExecutive Director of the U.S. Human Rights Network; Jerome Scott, Founder\nand Board Chair of Project South; Reverend Gregory Williams, President\nof Atlantans Building Leadership for Empowerment (ABLE); and many others.\n<\/blockquote>\nOnly seven months later Rev. Gregory Williams and others got to\nspeak against the all-too-similar Georgia law, HB 87.\nJeremy Redmon wrote for the AJC 3 March 2011,\n\nHouse passes Arizona-style bill aimed at illegal immigration<\/a>:\n\n\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThe Rev. Gregory Williams, the senior pastor at College Park CME Church,\nsaid he was concerned what the bill could do for the image of Georgia\nas a birthplace of the civil rights movement.\n

\n\u201cIf this does not get vetoed, we might as well go back to the back of\nthe bus,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThe progress of the civil rights movement\ntakes a step back with this legislation.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<\/a>\nRemember the real beneficiary of this law is CCA, which runs\n\nICE’s North Georgia Detenction Center.<\/a>\n

\nWe don’t need a CCA private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.\nSpend those tax dollars on rehabilitation and education.\n
