Yet our prison population only grew by only 65\ninmates in 2010.\n<p>\nThis year, our corrections budget is over $1 billion, consuming 11%\nof the state general fund.  The Department of Corrections was the only\nstate agency whose budget saw an increase this year.\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, a billion a year, like Georgia&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcor.state.ga.us\/Divisions\/Administration\/BudgetServices.html\">&#8220;950 plus million budget&#8221;<\/a>\nthat we also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/prison-budget-burdens-georgia-538411.html\">can&#8217;t afford.<\/a>\n<p>\nThe Tucson article cites the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/06\/private-prisons-dont-save-much-money-nytimes.html\">\nNY Times article that demonstrations private prisons don&#8217;t save money<\/a>,\ncontinues with examples of worse public safety at private prisons,\nand concludes:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nIn these difficult economic times, when the Governor and Legislature are\nmaking devastating cuts to health care, education, and social services, it\nis absolutely outrageous that we would waste scarce tax dollars on private\nprisons that generate no savings and are not keeping the public safe.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat also sounds like Georgia.\n<p>\nWe can&#8217;t afford a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.\nSpend those tax dollars on rehabilitation and education instead.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cell-out-arizona wrote in TucsonCitizen.com 12 July 2011, ARIZONA DOESN\u2019T NEED, CAN\u2019T AFFORD MORE PRIVATE PRISONS The Arizona Department of Corrections has given a green light to four private, for-profit correctional management corporations for the construction and management of an additional 5,000 state prison beds.
