\nThe Arizona Department of Corrections has given a green light to
\nfour private, for-profit correctional management corporations for the
\nconstruction and management of an additional 5,000 state prison beds.<\/p>\n

\nThe American Friends Service Committee condemns this action as unnecessary
\nand deeply irresponsible given the state\u2019s economic crisis and the
\ndismal safety records of all four of the corporations involved.<\/p>\n

\nArizona\u2019s Auditor General estimates this expansion will cost us over
\n$640 million by 2017. Yet our prison population only grew by only 65
\ninmates in 2010.<\/p>\n

\nThis year, our corrections budget is over $1 billion, consuming 11%
\nof the state general fund. The Department of Corrections was the only
\nstate agency whose budget saw an increase this year.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hm, a billion a year, like Georgia’s “950 plus million budget”<\/a>
\nthat we also can’t afford.<\/a><\/p>\n

\nThe Tucson article cites the
\n
\nNY Times article that demonstrations private prisons don’t save money<\/a>,
\ncontinues with examples of worse public safety at private prisons,
\nand concludes:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nIn these difficult economic times, when the Governor and Legislature are
\nmaking devastating cuts to health care, education, and social services, it
\nis absolutely outrageous that we would waste scarce tax dollars on private
\nprisons that generate no savings and are not keeping the public safe.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That also sounds like Georgia.<\/p>\n

\nWe can’t afford a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.
\nSpend those tax dollars on rehabilitation and education instead.<\/p>\n
