They&#8217;ll save more than they spent.\nTime for Georgia Power and Southern Company to stop dragging their feet\nand help us get on with it in Georgia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPeter Burrows wrote for Bloomberg Thursday that\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-03-21\/apple-says-data-centers-now-use-100-renewable-energy.html\">\nApple got nudged:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/environment\/renewable-energy\/\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d423adfbe970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d423adfbe970c-pi.png\"   width=\"490\" height=\"90\"  \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nA year ago, Apple was targeted by Greenpeace International, which\nranked Apple 12th out of 14 large technology companies in a report\ncalled\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/publications\/Campaign-reports\/Climate-Reports\/How-Clean-is-Your-Cloud\/\">\n\u201cHow Clean Is Your Cloud?\u201d<\/a> The environmental\ngroup, which held protests at Apple&#8217;s offices in Cupertino,\nCalifornia, charged Apple with relying on electricity from coal\nplants and gave Apple a grade of no better than D in the four\ncategories it tracked.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIncreasing our use of renewable energy is our primary\nobjective,\u201d Peter Oppenheimer, Apple&#8217;s chief financial\nofficer, said in an interview. \u201cWe think these efforts will\nresult in learnings that other companies and communities can benefit\nfrom as well.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nApple&#8217;s announcement shows \u201creal progress,\u201d Greenpeace\nsaid, urging the company disclose more detail on how it&#8217;s working\nwith utilities and state governments to achieve its energy goals.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nTransparency on types of energy received and used,\nlike\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/12\/a-renewable-energy-transparency-law-that-enabled-an-industry.html\">\nNorth Carolina&#8217;s  Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Tracking System<\/a>\nthat\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/12\/a-renewable-energy-transparency-law-that-enabled-an-industry.html\">\nenabled the solar power industry in NC<\/a>.\nGeorgia could be working towards that by passing\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/renewable-portfolio-standards-ga-nc-and-alec.html\">\nHB 503<\/a> (minus the bogus biomass parts).\nThat would make a lot more sense than listening to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/alec-responds-to-sierra-club-report.html\">\nALEC trying to prevent or repeal renewable portfolio standards<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAmong many wakeup calls for Georgia, <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/georgia-3-state-that-could-benefit-most-from-solar-electricity.html\">\nAn Arizona State University study two years ago ranked George #3\namong states that could benefit most from solar power<\/a>,\nboth for internal use and for export for profit.\nHere&#8217;s another wakeup call:\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/david-defeats-goliath-calvert-cliffs-3-nuke-license-denied-first-ever-by-nrc.html\">\nthe NRC for the first time ever denied a nuclear license<\/a>\nand several existing nukes are closing, while many others will not be built.\nIt&#8217;s time for\nGeorgia Power and Southern Company\nto cancel their\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/southern-companys-three-legged-nuclear-regulatory-capture-stool.html\">\nthree-legged nuclear regulatory-capture boondoggle<\/a>\nfor those already-15-months-late and $1-billion-over nukes\non the Savannah River\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/videos-solar-dublin-high-school-groundbreaking-dhs-solar-2013-03-11.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d423adfc5970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d423adfc5970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nso those companies can lead us in solar power inland\nand wind off the coast instead of dragging us backwards.\nIf they won&#8217;t do it, others will, as just demonstrated\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/solar-dublin-high-school-groundbreaking-tomorrow.html\">\nby the 1 megawatt solar groundbreaking<\/a> at Dublin High School\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/videos-solar-dublin-high-school-groundbreaking-dhs-solar-2013-03-11.html\">\nfinanced by municipal bonds<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"All it takes is the will to get it done, and Apple is doing it: from 35% renewable energy in 2010 to 75% in 2012, and 100% at all Apple data centers.
