\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nA McIntosh County water treatment plant is going green and saving hundreds\r\nof dollars in utility bills.\r\n

\r\nThe city of Darien’s wastewater treatment plant outfitted the facility\r\nwith solar panels. The city was able to invest more than $1 million\r\non renovations and upgrades to the wastewater collection system, lift\r\nstations and treatment plant.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nProkop put a bunch of pictures on facebook.<\/a>\r\n

\r\nWhere did Darien get the money?\r\n\r\n\r\nJoann Merrigan of WSAV tells us\r\n\r\nStimulus Money Applauded by City of Darien, It Refurbished Plant<\/a>:\r\n

\r\nThe complete remodel of the facility, including the installation of the\r\nsolar panels, was paid for with a grant from the Obama Administration’s\r\nAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The upgrade cost close to\r\none million, but most of that came in the form of stimulus money which\r\nthe City of Darien doesn’t have to pay back. Joint Manger for McIntosh\r\nCounty\/Darien Brett Cook says “it really was desperately needed from\r\nan operational standpoint. We were under a consent order from the\r\nEnvironmental Protective Division to make some upgrades to the plant, so\r\nwe were looking at tremendous expense if we were not able to participate\r\nin this program. So it was a lifesaver. It came through just at the\r\nright time for the city of Darien.”\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAdvantages of solar?\r\n

\r\n“It’s probably saving us more than $400 a month in costs that solar\r\npower is going back to the Georgia grid, which we are selling back to\r\nGeorgia Power, and we are selling it at a higher rate than we are paying\r\nand they just credit our bill,” said Frank Field, of the city of Darien.\r\n

\r\n“That offsets the amount of energy the water treatment uses to do its\r\nprocessing also saves a great deal of water and pollution that would go\r\ninto the air,” said Julian Smith, owner of SolarSmith.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThat’s\r\n\r\nSolarSmith<\/a>\r\nof Savannah.\r\n
