Robert Byrd and the rest of the state&#8217;s congressional delegation<br \/>\nto oppose funding a private prison for undocumented immigrants in<br \/>\nPendleton County near the Virginia border.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wvcc.org\/\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"316\" height=\"118\" src=\"http:\/\/wvcc.org\/images\/NewBannerTransparent3.gif\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe Council of Churches is<br \/>\none of several groups discussing immigration reform ahead of expected<br \/>\ncongressional action on the issue. The Council has asked federal<br \/>\nlawmakers&#8217; help in the effort, arguing private prison operations have<br \/>\nbeen rife with abuse. GSI Professional Corrections is seeking county<br \/>\ncommission approval to build the detention center near Sugar Grove to<br \/>\nhouse 1,000 nonviolent immigrant detainees awaiting possible deportation.<\/p>\n<p>\nRev. Dennis Sparks, the Council&#8217;s executive director, complains private<br \/>\nprisons operate outside the mainstream legal\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nsystem. Young people have<br \/>\nbeen trapped in them unprotected, he says, simply for being members of<br \/>\nundocumented families, even if they were born in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;There have been a lot of abuses of children in these facilities:<br \/>\nno way to communicate adequately, no way to get legal protection or<br \/>\nrepresentation. So, they&#8217;re stuck.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nGSI Corrections has said the prison would create 300 jobs, but Sparks<br \/>\nsees private prisons as a bad idea in general. In other places, he adds,<br \/>\nthe jobs have not materialized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We don&#8217;t need a private prison in Lowndes County, Georgia.<br \/>\nSpend that tax money on rehabilitation and incarceration instead.<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another Sunday, another church group against private prisons; this time, a group of churches.
