{"id":166,"date":"2013-01-27T11:51:50","date_gmt":"2013-01-27T16:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/klvb-alapaha-river-cleanup-at-old-state-road-in-2007.html"},"modified":"2013-01-27T11:51:50","modified_gmt":"2013-01-27T16:51:50","slug":"klvb-alapaha-river-cleanup-at-old-state-road-in-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/klvb-alapaha-river-cleanup-at-old-state-road-in-2007.html","title":{"rendered":"KLVB Alapaha River cleanup at Old State Road in 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSo if Old State Road to the Alapaha River has, according to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/vote-for-a-hearing-to-abandoning-a-road-leading-to-the-alapaha-river-lcc-2013-01-22.html\">\nthe criteria recited by County Engineer Mike Fletcher<\/a>,\n&#8220;ceased to be used by the public to the extent that\nno substantial public purpose is served by it&#8221;,\nwhy did Keep Lowndes\/Valdosta Beautiful (KLVB) do a cleanup there in 2007?\nIs the removal of that section of road\n&#8220;from the county road system&#8230; in the public&#8217;s best interest&#8221;?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nJessica Pope wrote for the VDT 30 September 2007,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/x1155885778\/River-cleanup\/print\">\nRiver cleanup<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nSaturday&#8217;s Alapaha River cleanup will be held in cooperation with\nRivers Alive, a statewide annual volunteer waterway cleanup that\ntargets Georgia&#8217;s 70,150 miles of streams and rivers each October,\nand Hands On Georgia Week 2007, which will culminate on Saturday\nwith Hands on Atlanta Day, the largest volunteer service day in the\ncountry. A number of volunteers will spend the day cleaning\nGeorgia&#8217;s waterways, building wheelchair ramps, collecting cans of\nfood for Georgia&#8217;s food banks and as picking up trash along\nGeorgia&#8217;s highways.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.klvb.net\/photos.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee7f25e95970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee7f25e95970d-pi.jpg\"   width=\"500\"  \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nAnyone interested in participating in the Alapaha River cleanup\nSaturday should head on U.S. 84 East past Naylor, turn left on Good\nHope Road then turn right on Old State Road. Small boats and canoes\nare welcome. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and participation\nwaivers must be signed.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nChildren are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Boys and\ngirls ages 12 and under will be assigned to the Alapaha River&#8217;s bank\nand trail areas. All participants should wear or bring boots, shoes\nand clothes they don&#8217;t mind getting dirty or wet, bug repellent,\ntrash pokers or long tongs, an emergency phone number and work\ngloves. Water, soft drinks and T-shirts will be provided following\nthe cleanup while supplies last.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAs a landowner myself, I can understand if the landowner requesting\nclosure of the road is concerned about trash on his land, especially\nafter\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/get-a-job-lowndes-county-to-waste-site-workers.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee7f25e9f970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee7f25e9f970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/get-a-job-lowndes-county-to-waste-site-workers.html\">\nthe county&#8217;s irresponsible decision to close the waste collection sites.<\/a>\nBut perhaps a better solution than closing the road might be for\nthe county to take responsibility for coordinating\nabout trash prevention and retrieval with\nthe landowner and those who use that road for access to the Alapaha River?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"So if Old State Road to the Alapaha River has, according to the criteria recited by County Engineer Mike Fletcher, &#8220;ceased to be used by the public to the extent that no substantial public purpose is served by it&#8221;, why did Keep Lowndes\/Valdosta Beautiful (KLVB) do a cleanup there in 2007?
