Sumner wrote for the Albany Herald 9 August 2011,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albanyherald.com\/news\/headlines\/US_senators_meet_with_public_about_concerns_127332918.html?ref=918\">\nU.S. senators meet with public about concerns<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.albanyherald.com\/news\/headlines\/US_senators_meet_with_public_about_concerns_127332918.html?ref=918\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width-\"216\" height=\"149\" src=\"http:\/\/media.graytvinc.com\/images\/Chambliss-Isakson.jpg\"><\/a>\nGretchen Quarterman, a Lowndes County Democrat who drove from Valdosta to\nparticipate in the meeting, asked both senators if they were committed\nto bringing U.S. armed forces abroad home, thereby saving money; money,\nshe said, that could be spent on much-needed domestic programs like\ninfrastructure improvements here.\n<p>\n\u201cEverything has got to be on the table, and yes, defense has got to\nbe on the table as well,\u201d Isakson said. \u201cBut we have to make sure\nthat we don\u2019t slight the veterans who are coming home and will need\nproper care.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nThen he grossly underestimated the military budget and said Congress\nwouldn&#8217;t tell the Pentagon what to do.\n<p>\nGeorge Boston Rhynes spoke:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nGeorge Grimes, a former head of the NAACP in Valdosta asked if the\nsenators could work to end Georgia\u2019s status as a right to work state,\nsaying that many statewide workers are being terminated \u201cfor cause\nand without cause,\u201d contributing to high unemployment numbers.\n<p>\nIsakson referred Grimes to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission\nin Atlanta as a place to file a grievance if a person feels that he or\nshe has been unfairly terminated.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe senators also talked about HB 87; more on that in another post.\n<p>\nThis was the first of six such meetings planned, so you could go to another one.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two local Lowndes County people spoke to Georgia&#8217;s Senators at their town hall meeting in Fitzgerald about the recent debt ceiling legislation.
