\n\n<\/a>\nIn recent years a little noticed shift has been transforming suburbia:\nthe home of the middle class has become the home of the working poor. As\na result, roadways that were built for the car are now used by a growing\npopulation that can\u2019t afford to drive. The consequences can be deadly.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nAccording to a recent report, by two national transportation groups,\nabout 43 thousand pedestrians were killed in the U.S. in the last decade;\n\u201cthe equivalent of a jumbo jet going down roughly every month.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nOf course, the problem didn’t start with an increase in pedestrians.\n\n\n

\n\n<\/a>\nEllen Dunham-Jones is a Professor of urban design at Georgia Tech,\nand co-author of a book called \u201cRetrofitting Suburbia.\u201d\n

\nDunham-Jones says suburban communities across the nation need a major re-think.\n<\/blockquote>\nSuburbs were designed for cars and big oil, not for people, with no stores,\nstreets so wide they cause speeding, and no trees.\nVirginia leads the way in\n\nturning isolated cul de sacs into livable communities<\/a>.\nGeorgia and Lowndes County, not so much.\nSee \nnext post.<\/a>\n
