{"id":163,"date":"2013-01-28T11:37:21","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T16:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/georgia-power-to-announce-20-year-plan-thursday.html"},"modified":"2013-01-28T11:37:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T16:37:21","slug":"georgia-power-to-announce-20-year-plan-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/georgia-power-to-announce-20-year-plan-thursday.html","title":{"rendered":"Georgia Power to announce 20-year plan Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nWhat will Georgia Power announce for a 20 year energy plan Thursday?\nWill they (1) just double down on their rate-hike boondoggles for\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/southern-companys-three-legged-nuclear-regulatory-capture-stool.html\">\nnuclear<\/a> and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/georgia-power-hikes-prices-for-gas-and-nuclear-then-complains-about-solar.html\">\ngas<\/a>,\nor (2) they could flip like\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/austin-energy-changed-from-anti-solar-to-pro-solar-in-one-year.html\">\nAustin Energy in 2003<\/a> and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/were-just-ripe-for-solar-power-cobb-emc.html\">\nCobb EMC in 2012<\/a>\nand suddenly go solar?\nThe wording here looks like it&#8217;s going to be the former.\nThat they even feel compelled to announce some sort of formal plan instead of just\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/georgia-powers-bowers-pushes-solar-misinformation-out-the-next-fifty-years.html\">\nshovelling disinformation out another 50 years<\/a>\nindicates they&#8217;re feeling\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/help-sierra-club-send-a-message-to-georgia-power-ceo-bowers.html\">\nthe pressure to change direction<\/a>\nto real sustainable energy: wind and solar power.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMatt Shedd wrote for WUGATV today,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wugatv.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=48901:georgia-power-to-release-energy-plan&amp;catid=37:state-and-local-news\">\nGeorgia Power To Release Energy Plan<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nGeorgia Power is set to release a 20-year energy plan on Thursday\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wugatv.org\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=48901:georgia-power-to-release-energy-plan&amp;catid=37:state-and-local-news\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c36581d06970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c36581d06970b-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nwhich will outline a way for the company and the state to be less\nreliant on coal power. The AJC reports that just 5 years ago, the\ncompany&#8217;s reliance on coal was at 70 percent.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThat number has now dropped to 47 percent. These changes are coming\nin the wake of Georgia Power&#8217;s parent, the Southern Co., being\npushed by environmental rules to rely less on coal. Georgia Power\nwon approval to buy electricity produced by natural gas from its\nsister company Southern Power, which may be part of the company&#8217;s\nfuture plans.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThomas A. Fanning, CEO of Georgia Power&#8217;s parent The Southern Company (SO),\nhas been touting 70% to 35% reduction in coal since at least\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/big-bet-on-solar-power-sam-booher-shale-and-australia-so-ceo-thomas-a-fanning-so-2012-05-23.html\">\nMay 2012 at the SO shareholder meeting.<\/a>\nFanning continues to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/why-energy-matters-to-you-thomas-a-fanning.html\">\nemphasize nuclear, gas, and &#8220;clean coal&#8221;<\/a>\ninstead of real sustainable energy, namely wind and solar power.\nHe also continues to assert electricity demand will increase,\nwhile\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/will-electricity-demand-increase.html\">\nignoring conservation and efficiency,<\/a> which for Georgia\ncould remove all need for new energy,\nenabling solar and wind to shut down more coal and gas plants,\nas well as nukes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSo, get out the popcorn and take your bets.\nWill it be (1) or will it be (2)?\nI&#8217;m betting this time it will be (1), but sooner or later it will be (2),\nand even Georgia Power, and yes, even Southern Company,\nwill stop digging in their heels and get on the solar\ntrain to profits, jobs, energy independence, and oh, by the way, clean\nair and plenty of clean water.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What will Georgia Power announce for a 20 year energy plan Thursday?
