in running<br \/>\nin the November election for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/local.php#vcc\"><br \/>\nValdosta<\/a> Mayor, City Council At Large and<br \/>\nCouncil Districts 1, 3, and 5;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/local.php#hcc\"><br \/>\nHahira<\/a> City Council Districts 2 and 3;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/local.php#Dasher\"><br \/>\nCity of Dasher<\/a><br \/>\nPost 3 and 4;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/local.php#lpcc\"><br \/>\nCity of Lake Park<\/a> Mayor and four council<br \/>\npositions;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/govt\/local.php#rcc\"><br \/>\nRemerton<\/a> Mayor and five council seats;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocats.org\/content.asp?pid=85&#038;id=563\"><br \/>\nValdosta School Board<\/a><br \/>\nDistricts 4, 5, and 6.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The VDT points out that city elections usually don&#8217;t get much turnout,<br \/>\nbut this year there are two referendum questions on the ballot that<br \/>\nmay cause record turnout.<br \/>\nThey are:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<H3><a href=\"\/blog\/category\/alcohol\"><br \/>\nSunday alcohol sales<\/a><\/H3><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/valdosta-city-council-just-passed-motion-for-alcohol-referendum-jordan-leman.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm7.static.flickr.com\/6027\/5964192459_ff5f170af8_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nOn 21 July 2011 the Valdosta City Council voted to put a referendum<br \/>\non the ballot for<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/valdosta-city-council-just-passed-motion-for-alcohol-referendum-jordan-leman.html\"><br \/>\npermitting sales of alcohol on Sunday<\/a>.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s something that could get even students out to vote.<br \/>\nIt was students such as<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/valdosta-city-council-just-passed-motion-for-alcohol-referendum-jordan-leman.html\"><br \/>\nJordan Leman<\/a> and<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/sunday-sales-of-alcohol-alexander-abell.html\"><br \/>\nAlexander Abell<\/a><br \/>\nwho lobbied the heaviest to get the City Council to do that.<br \/>\nNow, can they turn out the vote?<br \/>\n<H3>School consolidation<\/H3><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/cuee-filed-enough-petitions-for-a-referendum.html\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/chart.googleapis.com\/chart?cht=p&#038;chd=s:Uf9a&#038;chs=400x300&#038;chma=100,69&#038;chd=t:21111,7068,95&#038;chds=0,21111&#038;chtt=0.33%25%20of%20registered%20voters|got%20CUEE%27s%20referendum%20on%20the%20ballot%20in%20Valdosta|Pie%20chart%20by%20LAKE,%20the%20Lowndes%20Area%20Knowledge%20Exchange&#038;chl=Registered%20voters|Needed|Got%2095%20more\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cueeinc.com\/index.html\"><br \/>\nCUEE<\/a> managed to get its school unification (or consolidation or desegregation)<br \/>\nreferendum on the ballot with<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/08\/cuee-filed-enough-petitions-for-a-referendum.html\"><br \/>\n0.33% more than the 25% of registered voters required<\/a>.<br \/>\nHow many of those petition signers believed CUEE&#8217;s rhetoric that<br \/>\nsigning the petition wasn&#8217;t a vote for consolidation?<br \/>\nIf a lot of them did, they might just turn out to vote no.<br \/>\nCan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Friends-of-Valdosta-City-Schools\/179833012062350\">FVCS<\/a> get them out to vote do that?<br \/>\nOr will FVCS <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/the-qualified-voters-voting-thereon-in-each-separate-school-system-proposed-to-be-consolidated-ga-constitution.html\">get an injunction to stop that referendum<br \/>\nbecause according to the Georgia Constitution:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;no such consolidation shall become effective until approved by a majority<br \/>\nof the qualified voters voting thereon in each separate school system<br \/>\nproposed to be consolidated&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even if the Valdosta school consolidation referendum passes,<br \/>\na county-wide referendum may be necessary to decide the issue.<br \/>\n<H3>Get out and vote<\/H3><br \/>\nIf you don&#8217;t, don&#8217;t whine about the result.<br \/>\nPlus there are plenty of things to do in addition to voting:<br \/>\nregister people to vote, make telephone calls, take leaflets door to door,<br \/>\ncarry people to the polls, etc.<br \/>\n<H3>Who&#8217;s running?<\/H3><br \/>\nSuccessful local candidates have filed at the last minute with almost<br \/>\nno campaign funds and won.
