\nDo you know how many outages nuclear reactors near here have had?\nProbably not, because that’s usually not in the news,\nand you have to dig into day by day NRC reactor status reports<\/a>\nto find out.\nIt turns out nuclear power is 0\/7 instead of 24\/7 on many a day.\n<\/p>\n

\nLooking at all nine\nnuclear reactors within 200 miles of here<\/a>,\nthe graph drips downtime like tears.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Reactors<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe available data on NRC’s website and graphed here goes back to 31 March 2006,\nthrough 29 January 2013.\nLet’s look at each of our closest reactors one by one. Hatch 1 on the Altamaha River,\nin addition to its recent\n\n40% power on 21 January and 87% on 5 January<\/a>,\nhas had quite a few outages:\n<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\n\"Hatch<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nSometimes Hatch 2 does get in the news for outages,\nfor example\n\n10 August 2007<\/a>,\n\n11 March 2008<\/a>,\nand\n\n22 June 2009<\/a>.\nAt least it hasn’t\n\ncaught on fire like the South Texas Nuclear Project<\/a>,\nalthough we don’t know whether Hatch has\n\nfixed the generic GE Mark 1 substandard fire protection.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Hatch<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nAbout 125 miles from here, near Dothan, Alabama,\nFarley 1 shows at least five lengthy outages on the graph,\nand a bunch of shorter outages and brownouts.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Farley<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nLooks like at least four long outages for Farley 2.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Farley<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThen there’s Crystal River, only 160 miles to the south of us,\nstill down since 26 September 2009,\nand with\n\nnone of Progress, Duke, or Nuclear Electric Insurance Ltd. (NEIL)\nwanting to pay to fix it.<\/a>\nFailed concrete: \nthe bane of nuclear reactors.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Crystal<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe pride of Southern Company’s fleet, Vogtle 1, 200 miles from here\non the Savannah River, shows\nfive lengthy outages, one late last year, plus\nsome amusing stairstep brownouts, and a long period in 2007 below full power.\n<\/p>\n

\nVogtle 2 shows four lengthy outages and a variety of brownouts.\n<\/p>\n

\nLet’s not forget the two nukes\n\nGeorgia Power customers are already paying for<\/a>\nwithout getting any electricity from them.\nI don’t know when Georgia Power actually started charging for that\n\nCWIP rate hike<\/a>,\nso I used 22 April 2009, the day after\n\nGov. Perdue signed<\/a>\nthe authorizing law,\n\nSB 31 – Energy Rate Increases to Finance Nuclear Power Plant Construction<\/a>.\nYou may want to remember\n\nwho voted for that stealth tax in the legislature.<\/a>\nHere’s Vogtle 3 at zero power continuously since 22 April 2009.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Vogtle<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nJust like Vogtle 3, Vogtle 4 has been at 0% since 22 April 2009,\nwhile the pair of them have run up about $1.7 billion in charges\nto Georgia Power customers so far, and climbing.\nI don’t know which of those two reactor vessels that is\n\nsitting unprotected on the dock at Savannah.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"Vogtle<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nOut of nine reactors within 200 miles of here that customers are paying for,\n3 have been down since 2009, and the rest have had frequent brownouts\nand outages.\nNot a very good score.\n<\/p>\n
