Public Meetings Set for Transportation Sales Tax Project List<\/H3>\n\n<\/a>\nThe Southern Georgia Regional Transportation Roundtable has set a series\nof public meetings to review the Draft Constrained Investment List for\nthe following counties, representing the Special District for a proposed\ntransportation sales and use tax: Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien,\nBrantley, Brooks, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier,\nLowndes, Pierce, Tift, Turner, and Ware.\n

\nIn 2010, Governor Sonny Perdue signed into law the Transportation\nInvestment Act of 2010, a law prescribing a regional sales tax referendum\nfor transportation projects. Jay Roberts, State Representative from\nDistrict 154-Ocilla, and Chairman of the House Transportation Committee,\nsaid \u201cThis law gives\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

\nthe citizens of each region the power to invest\nin their own transportation infrastructure for economic development\nand job creation.\u201d The law would create a regional one-percent sales\ntax to be collected for ten years and is divided into two pots of\nrevenue. Seventy-five percent of the revenue is distributed regionally\nby the Constrained Investment List; the remaining twenty-five percent\nis divided by formula amongst all local governments in the region to\nuse at their discretion on transportation projects. \u201cThe State\u2019s\ntransportation revenues no longer support the growing need to remain\neconomically competitive, this new revenue will allow Georgia to continue\nto be a leader in transportation investment\u201d said Roberts.\n

\nThis summer the Executive Committee of the Roundtable has met several\ntimes to select the projects presented in this draft list. Travis Harper,\nMayor of Nashville, GA and Chairman of the Executive Committee commented\non the process to review and select the projects: \u201cThe Executive\nCommittee reviewed each and every project and how it best met the needs\nof the region, and worked to make sure the sales tax revenue was divided\nequitably amongst the region.\u201d The Executive Committee selected 57\nprojects, totaling more than $495 million. Each county has at least\none project.\n

\nIn September the following public meetings will be held so the public can\ncomment on the Draft Constrained Investment List. Three public meetings\nwill be held at the following locations, the Project List will also be\navailable online at www.sgrc.us\/transportation.\n

\nWednesday, September 7, 2011; 6:00 p.m. \u2013 8:00 p.m.; at the Southern\nGeorgia Regional Commission Waycross Office; 1725 South Georgia Parkway\nWest, Waycross, Georgia; presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.\n

\nMonday, September 19, 2011; 10:00 a.m. \u2013 12:00 p.m.; at the Valdosta\nCity Hall Annex; 300 North Lee Street, Valdosta, Georgia; presentation\nwill begin at 10:30 a.m.\n

\nMonday, September 19, 2011; 6:00 p.m. \u2013 8:00 p.m.; at the Grand\nConference Center; 119 South Main Street, Fitzgerald, Georgia;\npresentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.\n

\nAfter the public meetings the Roundtable will reconvene to review the\npublic comments and adopt a final Constrained List that will be presented\non the ballot to voters in 2012.\n
