All the tracks are still in place and still in use for freight.\nWith some rolling stock and a few deals with the railroads, Valdosta\nand Lowndes County could become again a passenger rail hub with a mass\ntransit system for local commuting to jobs and for long distance travel.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/gsf-rr-1918-map.html\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.quarterman.com\/images\/gsf1918.jpg\"><\/a>\nAdd\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/12m-to-widen-us-41-n-is-more-than-75m-for-a-bus-system.html\">\na bus system<\/a> and local commuting becomes very practical.\nPeople could take the train to town and catch a bus to work.\nMany people could walk or take a bicycle to their work from the\ntrain station.\nThis could work the other way around, too.\nPeople could live in Valdosta and work in Ray City or Lakeland or\nHahira or Lake Park or Clyattville and not have to drive to get there.\nThat would save\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/commuting-waste-quantified.html\">\na lot of wasted time and wasted fuel.<\/a>\n<p>\nThis kind of mass transit would attract the knowledge-based workers\nwe supposedly want around here.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/12m-to-widen-us-41-n-is-more-than-75m-for-a-bus-system.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5235\/5851009191_c14be02da2_m.jpg\"><\/a>\nIncluding jobs our high school and college graduates could take,\nso they wouldn&#8217;t have to move elsewhere.\n<p>\nAnd upgrading the railroads, building stations, building\nand refurbishing houses and apartments near the stations, etc.,\nwould employ a lot of construction workers;\nprobably as many as road projects and sprawling subdivision projects,\nbut without the sprawl.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Look at all those other railroads converging on Valdosta in that GFRR project proposal map.
