High school science teacher and Woodland, NC town council agree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\n<strong>Update 2015-12-23:<\/strong> There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/beneath-woodland-nc-solar.html\">more to the story<\/a>\r\n<p>\r\nPhotosynthesis fails near solar panels,\r\nthinks a high school science teacher.\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2015\/12\/north-carolina-citizenry-defeat-pernicious-big-solar-plan-to-suck-up-the-sun\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:300px\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/woodland-640x390.png\"><\/a>\r\nAnd the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.townofwoodlandnc.com\/council.htm\">\r\nWoodland, NC Town Council<\/a> not only agreed with her and rejected\r\na rezoning proposal for a solar farm, it passed\r\na moratorium on future solar farms.\r\nYet I bet they have fields all around sprayed with Roundup and other\r\ncancer-causing chemicals that actually do affect plants, animals, and people.\r\n<p>\r\nRoanoke-Chowan News-Herald,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roanoke-chowannewsherald.com\/2015\/12\/08\/woodland-rejects-solar-farm\/\">\r\nWoodland rejects solar farm<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nJane Mann said she is a local native and is concerned about the\r\nnatural vegetation that makes the community beautiful.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nShe is a retired Northampton science teacher and is concerned that\r\nphotosynthesis, which depends upon sunlight, would not happen and\r\nwould keep the vegetation from growing. She said she has observed\r\nareas near solar panels where vegetation is brown and dead because\r\nit did not receive enough sunlight.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nShe also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area,\r\nsaying no one could tell her that solar panels didn&#8217;t cause cancer.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;I want to know what&#8217;s going to happen,&rdquo; she said.\r\n&ldquo;I want information. Enough is enough. I don&#8217;t see the profit\r\nfor the town.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;People come with hidden agendas,&rdquo; she said.\r\n&ldquo;Until we can find if anything is going to damage this\r\ncommunity, we shouldn&#8217;t sign any paper.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nI guess she never noticed all the plants near Monsanto-seed fields\r\nare dead, most of the birds are gone, and all her students are fat\r\nfrom eating processed foods stuffed with high fructose corn syrup.\r\nBut sure, solar panels are the problem.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnother local citizen brought up a real economic problem, but blamed\r\nthe wrong culprit.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nBobby Mann said he watched communities dry up when I-95 came along\r\nand warned that would happen to Woodland because of the solar farms.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAs <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2015\/12\/north-carolina-citizenry-defeat-pernicious-big-solar-plan-to-suck-up-the-sun\/\">\r\nEric Berger pointed out in ars technical<\/a>,\r\nthere don&#8217;t actually seem to be any solar farms now in or near Woodland, NC.\r\n<p>\r\nBack to Bobby Mann:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;You&#8217;re killing your town,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;All the\r\nyoung people are going to move out.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWell, there is a real problem with rural communities losing jobs and\r\ncitizens to cities.\r\nBut he&#8217;s pointing at the wrong culprit.\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nHe said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun\r\nand businesses would not come to Woodland.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nI wonder what advertising your local government acts on wildly\r\ninaccurate misinformation\r\nwill do to businesses thinking about locating in Woodland?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThis is what happens when people believe corporate propaganda:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nMayor Kenneth Manual called for the vote, which was 3-1 against\r\nrezoning the land (the mayor only votes in case of a tie).\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe council later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nI&#8217;d guess businesses would go somewhere else,\r\nafter the many news stories about this incident.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Update 2015-12-23: There&#8217;s more to the story Photosynthesis fails near solar panels, thinks a high school science teacher.
