High school science teacher and Woodland, NC town council agree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>Update 2015-12-23:<\/strong> There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/beneath-woodland-nc-solar.html\">more to the story<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nPhotosynthesis fails near solar panels,<br \/>\nthinks a high school science teacher.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2015\/12\/north-carolina-citizenry-defeat-pernicious-big-solar-plan-to-suck-up-the-sun\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:300px\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/woodland-640x390.png\"><\/a><br \/>\nAnd the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.townofwoodlandnc.com\/council.htm\"><br \/>\nWoodland, NC Town Council<\/a> not only agreed with her and rejected<br \/>\na rezoning proposal for a solar farm, it passed<br \/>\na moratorium on future solar farms.<br \/>\nYet I bet they have fields all around sprayed with Roundup and other<br \/>\ncancer-causing chemicals that actually do affect plants, animals, and people.<\/p>\n<p>\nRoanoke-Chowan News-Herald,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roanoke-chowannewsherald.com\/2015\/12\/08\/woodland-rejects-solar-farm\/\"><br \/>\nWoodland rejects solar farm<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nJane Mann said she is a local native and is concerned about the<br \/>\nnatural vegetation that makes the community beautiful.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nShe is a retired Northampton science teacher and is concerned that<br \/>\nphotosynthesis, which depends upon sunlight, would not happen and<br \/>\nwould keep the vegetation from growing. She said she has observed<br \/>\nareas near solar panels where vegetation is brown and dead because<br \/>\nit did not receive enough sunlight.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nShe also questioned the high number of cancer deaths in the area,<br \/>\nsaying no one could tell her that solar panels didn&#8217;t cause cancer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;I want to know what&#8217;s going to happen,&rdquo; she said.<br \/>\n&ldquo;I want information. Enough is enough. I don&#8217;t see the profit<br \/>\nfor the town.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;People come with hidden agendas,&rdquo; she said.<br \/>\n&ldquo;Until we can find if anything is going to damage this<br \/>\ncommunity, we shouldn&#8217;t sign any paper.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nI guess she never noticed all the plants near Monsanto-seed fields<br \/>\nare dead, most of the birds are gone, and all her students are fat<br \/>\nfrom eating processed foods stuffed with high fructose corn syrup.<br \/>\nBut sure, solar panels are the problem.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnother local citizen brought up a real economic problem, but blamed<br \/>\nthe wrong culprit.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nBobby Mann said he watched communities dry up when I-95 came along<br \/>\nand warned that would happen to Woodland because of the solar farms.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAs <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2015\/12\/north-carolina-citizenry-defeat-pernicious-big-solar-plan-to-suck-up-the-sun\/\"><br \/>\nEric Berger pointed out in ars technical<\/a>,<br \/>\nthere don&#8217;t actually seem to be any solar farms now in or near Woodland, NC.<\/p>\n<p>\nBack to Bobby Mann:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\n&ldquo;You&#8217;re killing your town,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;All the<br \/>\nyoung people are going to move out.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWell, there is a real problem with rural communities losing jobs and<br \/>\ncitizens to cities.<br \/>\nBut he&#8217;s pointing at the wrong culprit.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nHe said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun<br \/>\nand businesses would not come to Woodland.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nI wonder what advertising your local government acts on wildly<br \/>\ninaccurate misinformation<br \/>\nwill do to businesses thinking about locating in Woodland?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis is what happens when people believe corporate propaganda:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nMayor Kenneth Manual called for the vote, which was 3-1 against<br \/>\nrezoning the land (the mayor only votes in case of a tie).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe council later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nI&#8217;d guess businesses would go somewhere else,<br \/>\nafter the many news stories about this incident.<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Update 2015-12-23: There&#8217;s more to the story Photosynthesis fails near solar panels, thinks a high school science teacher.
