Nathan Deal\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/x478402525\/In-Times-interview-Gov-Deal-talks-immigration-education-biomass\">\nis in the VDT today.<\/a>\n<H3>The Good<\/H3>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/1-in-13-georgia-adults-in-the-prison-system-pew-center-on-the-states.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm7.static.flickr.com\/6006\/5914821739_fafc9307df_o.png\"><\/a>\n<strong>THE TIMES: How are we going to address\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/1-in-13-georgia-adults-in-the-prison-system-pew-center-on-the-states.html\">\nthe large number of incarcerated citizens<\/a>\nand decrease those numbers?<\/strong>\n<p>\n<strong>DEAL:<\/strong>\n\u201cI think one of the better things we can do is have accountability\nin courts whether they be drug courts, DUI courts, mental-health courts,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/sentence-reform-in-georgia.html\">towards sentence reform.<\/a>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.accessnorthga.com\/img\/stories\/2011\/238154\/nathsign422_medium.jpg\"><\/a>\nthe like. We know that they work. We know the recidivism rate, if they go\nthrough those approaches rather than directly into the prison system. We\nhave less recidivism. We break the addictions, and we&#8217;ve got to work\nvery closely on that.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nI&#8217;ve previously noted that Gov. Deal has taken at least a tentative step\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/sentence-reform-in-georgia.html\">towards sentence reform.<\/a>\nThat&#8217;s good, but not enough.\nLet&#8217;s do the rest,\n\n<!--more-->\nwhat everybody from Jimmy Carter to the NAACP to\nGrover Norquist recommends:\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/a-radical-plan-to-stop-many-police-deaths-legalize-drugs.html\">\nend the war on drugs.<\/a>\nLegalize, regulate, and tax them instead,\nthus taking away funding for criminal drug dealers and gangs,\nand greatly reducing the prison population.\n<p>\nNext: <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/09\/gov-deal-the-ugly-on-energy.html\">\nThe Ugly.<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gov.
