\n\n<\/a>\nGeorgia’s pardons board rejected a last-ditch clemency plea from death\nrow inmate Troy Davis on Tuesday despite high-profile support from figures\nincluding the pope and\n\na former FBI director<\/a> for the claim that he was\nwrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989.\n

\n\n<\/a>\nDavis is scheduled to die Wednesday by injection for the killing of\noff-duty Savannah officer Mark MacPhail, who was slain while rushing to\nhelp a homeless man being attacked. It is the fourth time in four years\nthat Davis’ execution has been scheduled by Georgia officials.\n

\nSteve Hayes, spokesman for the Board of Pardons and Paroles, said\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

\nthe\npanel decided to rejected Davis’\n\n<\/a>\nrequest for clemency after hearing\nhours of testimony from his supporters and prosecutors. The board did\nnot elaborate on the decision in its written official response to the\nclemency application.\n

\nThe decision appeared to leave Davis with little chance of avoiding the\nexecution date. Defense attorney Jason Ewart has said that the\n\n<\/a>\npardons\nboard was likely Davis’ last option.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe story doesn’t mention the governor.\nYou know, the governor who was here the other day,\n\nprotested by students about Troy Davis<\/a>;\nthe governor who\n\ndidn’t seem inclined to do something about it.<\/a>\n

\n…when it comes to the sentence of death, there should be no room for\ndoubt. I believe there is no more serious crime than the murder of a\nlaw enforcement officer who was putting his or her life on the line to\nprotect innocent bystanders.
