\r\nIt’s now been a week since\r\nthe Lowndes County Commission passed\r\n\r\nan ordinance for no stated reason, not on the agenda, and not read to the\r\npublic.<\/a>\r\nIt’s still not on the\r\n\r\ncounty’s online list of ordinances.<\/a>\r\nGretchen was covering an event Friday at which she saw\r\nCommissioner Crawford Powell; she asked him to send her a copy of the ordinance.\r\nFive days later, nothing has arrived.\r\n

\r\nSo, our only clues are Commissioner Raines’ remarks that it had something\r\nto do with videoing and photographing.\r\nAnd his remarks that he believed that the Chairman could do it on his own,\r\nbut he’d like to make a motion for the Commission to approve it.\r\n

\r\nSo we have to guess it had something to do with\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nAshley Paulk’s outburst of the previous morning<\/a>,\r\nin which he\r\n\r\nflattered me<\/a>\r\nby addressing me and only me by name,\r\neven though there were at least two video cameras recording the meeting.\r\nThis is what he was going on about:\r\n

\r\nThe County Commission wishes from this day forward that any filming be\r\ndone from the media area in the back corner of the room.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nHe didn’t say anything about still photography, or for that matter\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nabout digital videoing, so I don’t know whether what he said\r\nhad anything to do with whatever it was that\r\nCommissioner Raines moved Tuesday and the Commission approved.\r\nNor does anybody else know.\r\n

\r\nNow a cynic might say,\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nCan they even pass a law like what the Chairman suggested?\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nWell, that is a good question, and one could guess that Raines wasn’t\r\nreally confident that the Chairman could do it alone, or he wouldn’t\r\nhave made the motion.\r\nThey didn’t provide any precedents about any other local government\r\ndoing this anywhere else, either.\r\nBut if they’re the first to do it, that makes it an even more special award!\r\n

\r\nPeople ask me,\r\n

\r\nIs it even legal to pass a law against a specific named individual?\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nWell, maybe not, but who am I to turn down flattery like that?\r\n

\r\nOthers ask me,\r\n

\r\nWhy don’t you hire a lawyer and challenge it?\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nChallenge what, exactly?\r\nNobody knows what it is.\r\nBesides, who am I to turn down an award as special as this?\r\n

\r\nNow the real cynics say,\r\n

\r\nWell, it’s just a county ordinance anyway, not a real law.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nMaybe so, but\r\nthe VDT doesn’t have one of these.\r\nWCTV doesn’t have one; WALB doesn’t have one.\r\nI bet even the AJC doesn’t have one of these.\r\nOnly LAKE posts news so good, there’s a law against it!\r\n
