{"id":14697,"date":"2015-11-26T13:38:41","date_gmt":"2015-11-26T18:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=14697"},"modified":"2015-11-26T13:44:06","modified_gmt":"2015-11-26T18:44:06","slug":"a-clean-energy-future-is-already-arriving-350-org-lns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/a-clean-energy-future-is-already-arriving-350-org-lns.html","title":{"rendered":"A clean energy future is already arriving &#8211;350.org &amp; LNS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nI&#8217;m thankful we&#8217;re already on the way to a clean energy future,\r\n<a title=\"Big Light bulb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14648\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:300;float:right\" width=\"300\" alt=\"Big Light bulb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/a93ba7cb60961a6630c5dab5ca3c7c7d.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nwith more jobs, less expense than doing nothing, no new nukes, no coal at all,\r\nmuch less natural gas, no need for any new pipelines, \r\nbetter health, clean air and water, and profit.\r\nThe COP meeting in Paris can do what it will, and we can still make a better world and profit by it.\r\nWe&#8217;re already doing it, with solar and wind power, energy efficiency and conservation, \r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.labor4sustainability.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cleanenergy_10212015_main.pdf\">\r\nThe Clean Energy Future: Protecting the Climate, Creating Jobs, Saving Money<\/a>,\r\nby Frank Ackerman of Synapse for LNS and 350.org:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n[M]eeting the IPCC targets will&#8230; create more jobs and save money.\r\n<p>\r\nThis report,<!--more-->\r\n\r\n prepared by the Labor Network for Sustainability1 (LNS)\r\nand 350.org,2 with research conducted by a team led by economist\r\nFrank Ackerman of Synapse Energy Economics,3 lays out an aggressive\r\nstrategy for energy efficiency and renewable energy that will:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li> Transform the electric system, cutting coal-fired power in half by 2030 and eliminating it by 2050;\r\nbuilding no new nuclear plants; and reducing the use of natural gas\r\nfar below business-as-usual levels.\r\n<li> Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 86 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, in the sectors analyzed\r\n(which account for three-quarters of US GHG emissions).\r\n<li> Save money &mdash; the cost of electricity, heating, and transportation under this plan is $78 billion less\r\nthan current projections from now through 2050.\r\n<li> Create new jobs &mdash; more than 500,000 per year over business as usual projections through 2050.\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nThe plan does not depend on any new technical breakthroughs to\r\nrealize these gains, only a continuation of current trends in energy\r\nefficiency and renewable energy costs.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<a title=\"Cover\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14641\">\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none\" width=\"600\" height=\"776\" alt=\"Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/4cdf24a2ace9d5af80150459d229642a.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p><a title=\"Industry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14668\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:150px;float:right\" width=\"150\" alt=\"Industry\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/540067684bdd1a36291a316b53103db7.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThis analysis by an economist is independent of and somewht more conservative the one by Mark Z. Jacobson of Stanford and his researchers, \r\n\r\nwhich shows\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/100-renewable-energy-for-u-s-by-2050.html\">a path to 100% clean sun, wind, and water power by 2050<\/a>.\r\n<a title=\"Agriculture\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14664\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:150px;float:left\" alt=\"Agriculture\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/62437e44b7ec4e094fbae48570632f5d.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nBoth depend greatly on what&#8217;s already happening:\r\nsolar power is already less expensive than any other power source, and\r\n<a title=\"Cars: fossil v. clean\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14660\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:150px;float:right\" alt=\"Cars: fossil v. clean\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/7a59762918995dc859402cdb471e27a1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nis increasingly beating natural gas for new deployments.\r\nNothing but wind power comes close.\r\n\r\nAdd in transportation conversion, efficiency, and conservation through recycling and better agriculture,\r\nand you get more jobs, less costs, and reduced emisions through clean energy.\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<a title=\"More Jobs, Less Cost, and Reduced Emissions through Clean Energy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14649\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none\" alt=\"More Jobs, Less Cost, and Reduced Emissions through Clean Energy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/eaebaee0b494042a1421944591be7f87.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThat won&#8217;t stop all sea level rise or ice melts, but it will slow them, and it will keep the planet within a habitable range of climate.\r\n<p>\r\n<a title=\"Solar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14692\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:75px;float:right\" alt=\"Solar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/a033edf431ee01255bcc9ae05df11beb.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nEven the worst politics can be overcome by the economic force of low wind costs\r\nand continually falling solar costs.\r\nWitness Georgia, by some measures the most corrupt state,\r\nnow\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/05\/ga-gov-nathan-deal-signs-solar-financing-law.html\">\r\nthe fastest-growing U.S. solar market<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n<a title=\"Wind\" href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=14686\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;width:75px;float:right\" alt=\"Wind\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/a02786c1ddacfe2e3052e88ca3a57e4c.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnd that clean future comes with more jobs, less energy and health care expenses, fewer deaths, healthier people, clean air and water, and profit.\r\n<p>\r\nThe sun is rising!\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m thankful we&#8217;re already on the way to a clean energy future, with more jobs, less expense than doing nothing, no new nukes, no coal at all, much less natural gas, no need for any new pipelines, better health, clean air and water, and profit.
