And\r\nprogress is happening <strong>far faster<\/strong> than I projected in my &lsquo;solar\r\nMoore&#8217;s Law&rsquo; piece of 2011.]\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rameznaam.com\/2011\/03\/17\/expis-moores-law-really-a-fair-comparison-for-solar\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/rameznaam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Solar-Module-Price-1977-2013-800x602.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nRamez Naam, on his blog, April 2015,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rameznaam.com\/2011\/03\/17\/expis-moores-law-really-a-fair-comparison-for-solar\/\">\r\nIs Moore&#8217;s Law Really a Fair Comparison for Solar?<\/a><!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n[This is an update of a post I first wrote in March of 2011,\r\nresponding to criticism of the analogy of Moore&#8217;s Law for solar\r\npower. Updating in April 2015, on the 50th Anniversary of Moore&#8217;s\r\nLaw, in light of renewed conversation on this topic&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8230; <strong>actual progress in solar power module prices has been dramatically faster than I projected<\/strong>.\r\n<p>\r\nIn the 2011 piece, the graphs project that in 2015, solar modules\r\nwould cost just under $2 \/ watt. We&#8217;d reach 50 cents per watt in\r\nmodule price around 2030.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<strong>We have 50 cent per watt solar module prices today<\/strong>. Solar module\r\nprices are 15 years ahead of where those (at the time, optimistic)\r\nprojections in 2011 placed them.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nSay what you will about the analogy of Solar Moore&#8217;s Law &mdash; the\r\nnumerical projections of price that I presented in 2011 were too\r\nconservative. Price reduction has happened far faster than the\r\nhistorical norm.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd yes, I know the mechanisms are not exactly the same as Moore&#8217;s Law for computer chips; that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s an analogy.\r\n<p>\r\nAn analogy demonstrating what exponential growth can do,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/what-is-moores-law-for-solar-power.html\">\r\nas I pointed out in 2012<\/a>:\r\ncomputers, mobile phones, the Internet itself, and smart phones\r\nall deployed on exponential curves.\r\n<p>\r\nOne year only a few had even heard of them.\r\nTen years later everybody had them.\r\n<P>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/power-source-growth-rates-like-compound-interest.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8226\/8421700685_a46c93cf27_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnd that ten years for solar power started in 2013, with the\r\npredictions by former FERC Chair Jon Wellinghoff and me that\r\nwithin a decade more U.S. electric energy will come from solar power\r\nthan any other source.\r\nThat&#8217;s by 2023.\r\nAnd according to eia and FERC figures,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/as-predicted-u-s-solar-capacity-grew-more-than-400-in-4-years.html\">\r\nsolar deployment is actually going faster than we predicted<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nJust like Ramez Naam observes that the prices driving that solar deployment are dropping faster than he predicted.\r\n<p>\r\nSolar power will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/solar-power-will-win-like-the-internet-did.html\">win like the Internet did<\/a>.\r\nNow that a governor who took campaign funds from six different pipeline companies\r\nhas signed a solar financing bill passed unanimously by both houses of the\r\nmost corruption-prone legislature, helping make that state, Georgia,\r\nthe fastest-growing solar market in the country,\r\nwhile coal is crashing, and new pipelines are running into opposition everywhere,\r\nit&#8217;s becoming obvious to everyone that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/solar-growth-like-compound-interest-has-turned-al-gore-into-an-optimist.html\">\r\nsolar power will win<\/a>.\r\nAfter all,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/09\/citi-agrees-fixing-climate-change-is-profitable.html\">\r\nfixing climate change is profitable<\/a>,\r\nand solar power is the fastest way to get going on that path.\r\n<p>\r\nNot just solar powering the current electrical grid, either.\r\nMark Z. Jacobson&#8217;s peer-reviewed Stanford research has laid out a plan for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/100-renewable-energy-for-u-s-by-2050.html\">\r\nsun, wind, and water power for everything<\/a> from cars to airplanes by 2050,\r\nwith 25% by 2025, 80% by 2030, and 90% by 2035.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/05\/ga-gov-nathan-deal-signs-solar-financing-law.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5301\/5632134880_2f2363a7f2_m.jpg?zoom=1.5&#038;w=625\"><\/a>\r\nThere is no longer any excuse for building more 20th century pipelines.\r\nLet&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/09\/lets-stop-sabal-trail-before-it-makes-any-more-mistakes.html#comment-54596\">stop Sabal Trail<\/a>\r\nand all its kin before they do any more damage.\r\n<p>\r\nLet&#8217;s go straight to cleaner, safer, faster, cheaper, sun, wind, and water power.\r\n<p>\r\nThe sun is rising!\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"More confirmation that solar power is winning so there&#8217;s no excuse for any new pipelines. tl;dr: Moore&#8217;s Law is an analogy.
