This, as we examine in this chapter, is due to the\r\n<span style=\"font-size:120%;font-weight:bold\">\r\nrapidly falling costs of renewables, which combined with lower fuel\r\nusage from energy efficiency investments actually result in\r\nsignificantly lower long term fuel bill<\/span>. Yes, we have to invest more\r\nin the early years, but we potentially save later,\r\n<span style=\"font-size:120%;font-weight:bold\">\r\nnot to mention\r\nthe liabilities of climate change that we potentially avoid<\/span>.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAs the Guardian article points out, this is not a new conclusion.\r\nSee for example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/100-renewable-energy-for-u-s-by-2050.html\">Mark Z. Jacobson&#8217;s fifty state plan<\/a>\r\nfor powering the whole country from sun, wind, and water.\r\nHere are\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/thesolutionsproject.org\/infographic\/#ga\">\r\nJacobson&#8217;s numbers for Georgia<\/a>,\r\nwhich include saving 2% of the state&#8217;s GDP in reduced mortality and illness,\r\nin addition to eliminating fuel costs, reducing transmission losses, etc.;\r\noh, and Savannah might not be underwatter.\r\n<p>\r\nHow much profit for the U.S. by actively addressing climate change?\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;By comparing the cost of mitigation to the avoided &lsquo;liabilities&rsquo; of\r\nclimate change, we can derive a simple &lsquo;return on investment&rsquo;. On a\r\nrisk adjusted basis this implies a return of 1-4% at the low point\r\nin 2021, rising to between 3% and 10% by 2035.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThat&#8217;s way higher than treasury bills and better than the stock market lately.\r\nPlus Miami, New Orleans, and Boston might not be completely underwater.\r\n<p>\r\nAnd as the Guardian article points out, most of this profit applies\r\n<em>even if no other country does anything<\/em>:\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-consensus-97-per-cent\/2015\/aug\/31\/citi-report-slowing-global-warming-would-save-tens-of-trillions-of-dollars\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/static\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2015\/8\/29\/1440864259004\/d0074246-9d09-4d63-8419-3fd7a65a17a6-620x442.png?w=620&#038;q=85&#038;auto=format&#038;sharp=10&#038;s=dd14f8b9a0a40f844fc3d389965acd0b\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd we know <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/07\/georgia-1-in-solar-jobs-and-china-beats-its-own-emissions-pledge.html\">China, for example, already is acting<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nSo we need to stop feeding the fossil fuel addiction by\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2015\/08\/30\/no-need-for-this-pipeline-solar-power-is-what-we-should-be-doing-wwals-on-wctv-2015-08-28\/\">\r\ndenying any new pipelines<\/a>, denying all\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/lng-export\/\">LNG export<\/a>, and\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2015\/07\/15\/follow-new-york-state-and-ban-fracking-nationwide-lois-gibbs\/\">\r\nending fracking<\/a>.\r\nWhile\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2015\/08\/26\/no-lng-and-no-nextera-for-hawaii-straight-to-renewable-energy-gov-ige\/\">\r\npromoting sun, wind, and water power<\/a>, plus\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/leds-vs-the-entire-u-s-nuclear-fleet-and-gas-pipeline.html\">\r\nconservation and efficiency<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Save more by acting to fix climate change, on similar overall investment for trying to deal with unfixed effects, says Citi Global Perspectives &#038; Solutions (GPS).
