GFA and\nUGA are excited about hosting our fourth biennial conference to\nexamine where we are with forest bioenergy development in Georgia\nand where we may be going in the near future. While many issues are\nbecoming clearer, much uncertainty remains with regard to government\npolicy and market prices for fossil fuels. This conference is an\nexcellent opportunity to hear from some of the players on the front\nlines of developing markets, influencing government policies, and\nconducting research on how these changes may impact our wood supply\nsystem.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThese are some of the topics that will be addressed during this\nconference by many of the people directly involved with these\nchanges that are taking place in our state. Join us and stay abreast\nof these significant changes taking place in our forest industry.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThe talk I think they should pay attention to is:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nWhat does Low-Cost Natural Gas Mean for Future Biomass Use?\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<p>\nIt means biomass can&#8217;t compete economically,\nas <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/wctv-on-biomass-site-vlcia-v-sterling-planet.html\">\nSterling Planet and the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority discovered<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/power-source-growth-rates-like-compound-interest.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d40d33497970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d40d33497970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nespecially with\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/georgia-power-hikes-prices-for-gas-and-nuclear-then-complains-about-solar.html\">\nGeorgia Power charging customers to subsidize new natural gas plants.<\/a>\nAnd since <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/solar-already-beats-gas.html\">\nsolar power is already cheaper than natural gas<\/a>,\nsolar is way cheaper than biomass.\nBiomass energy production in the U.S. is only growing\n3.7% per year, while solar is growing 60.9% a year,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/power-source-growth-rates-like-compound-interest.html\">\naccording to FERC<\/a>.\nPutting solar panels on a few acres for regular solar income makes a lot more\nsense than burning a lot of acres of trees for potential biomass income\nthat will never arrive.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/new-solar-panels-at-okra-paradise-farms.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b0176174db02a970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b0176174db02a970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nSo it would be a much better deal for tree farmers to\nput solar farms on some of their less fertile land.\nMaybe starting with solar panels on their farm workshops;\nI&#8217;m a tree farmer and a Georgia Forestry Association member,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/new-solar-panels-at-okra-paradise-farms.html\">\nand that&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve done.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Seen Monday.
