\r\nThe Development Authority begins tonight with a\r\npresentation<\/a>\r\nby\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nLeigh Ryan<\/a>, Director of Trade Services and Foreign Trade Zone 104,\r\n\r\nWorld Trade Center Savannah<\/a>.\r\nAccording to WTC Savannah<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\nA foreign trade zone is a federally approved location within the\r\nUnited States, which is considered outside of US Customs territory\r\nwhere domestic and foreign merchandise may be placed without formal\r\ncustoms entry and without payment of duties and taxes. Subzones are\r\nspecial-purpose facilities for companies unable to operate\r\neffectively at public zone sites. Foreign trade zones are usually\r\nlocated in or near Customs ports of entry, at industrial parks or\r\nterminal warehouse facilities. Their purpose is to attract and\r\npromote international trade and commerce.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nGeorgia has three FTZs — in Atlanta, Savannah and Brunswick.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nWorld Trade Center Savannah has been the federal grantee — or\r\nadministrator — for FTZ 104 since 2012 when the Savannah\r\nAirport Commission transferred the grant of authority of the trade\r\nzone after nearly 30 years.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Savannah-based FTZ has just been approved by the Foreign-Trade\r\nZones board at the U.S. Commerce Department to expand to include six\r\nnew counties: Candler, Emanuel, Jenkins, Tattnall, Toombs and\r\nTreutlen.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nFTZ 104 currently services Bulloch, Bryan, Chatham, Columbia,\r\nEffingham, Evans, Liberty, Long, Richmond and Screven counties,\r\nbringing to 16 the number of counties within their service area that\r\ncan take advantage of the FTZ’s competitive edge in international\r\ntrade.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Foreign-Trade Zone 104 has already proven to be a valuable\r\nasset in attracting foreign direct investment projects and helping\r\nregional businesses grow,” said World Trade Center Savannah\r\nPresident and CEO Trip Tollison. “By adding to the zone, World\r\nTrade Center Savannah can help businesses and communities grow in\r\nthese counties.”…\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nWhile it sounds like a single entity, FTZ 104 is not a single\r\nlocation. It actually encompasses a designated system and operation\r\nwithin a number of businesses and locations around the region,\r\nincluding Tumi Luggage in Vidalia, Alcoa (formerly Firth Rixson) in\r\nLiberty County and the Interstate Center in Bryan County. Those are\r\nconsidered sub-zones, formally known as Alternative Site Framework\r\nservices areas\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
