\r\nExxon showed more sense three decades ago than now,\r\n\r\n<\/a> when it’s\r\nback at the same Malaysian oil and gas field it backed off from in 1981\r\nbecause it would release massive amounts of carbon dioxide that would\r\naccelerate climate change.\r\nIt’s time to end the era of fossil fuels and get on with changing\r\nthe world to cheaper, faster, and far cleaner sun, wind, and water power.\r\n

\r\nA decade before Al Gore’s 1992 book\r\n\r\nEarth in the Balance<\/a>,\r\nyears before Bill McKibben’s 1989 book\r\n\r\nThe End of Nature<\/a>,\r\nbefore \r\nthe same year as\r\nthe publication of the first GISS scientific study on\r\n\r\nClimate impact of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide<\/a> in Science,,\r\naccording to Suzanne Goldenberg, The Guardian, 8 July 2015,\r\n\r\nExxon knew of climate change in 1981, email says — but it funded deniers for 27 more years<\/a>,\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nA newly unearthed missive from Lenny Bernstein, a climate expert\r\nwith the oil firm for 30 years, shows concerns over high presence of\r\ncarbon dioxide in enormous gas field in south-east Asia factored\r\ninto decision not to tap it\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nExxon didn’t just know about climate change way back when it wasn’t\r\na public issue and scientists were just establishing solid evidence,\r\nExxon acted on that knowledge way back then.\r\nAnd nonetheless funded climate denial propaganda for almost three decades.\r\nJust like big tobacco before it.\r\n

\r\nAnd now Exxon is back exploring that very same Natuna oil and gas field off \r\nMalaysia, according to\r\n2b1st Consulting, 13 November 2012,\r\n\r\nPTTEP to replace Petronas in Indonesia East Natuna Project:\r\nPTTEP to join ExxonMobil, Total and Pertamina<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

In 2010<\/strong>, Petronas<\/a><\/strong> from Malaysia<\/strong> had signed Heads of Agreement<\/strong> <\/a>with ExxonMobil<\/a>, Total<\/a> <\/strong>and Pertamina<\/strong>, but on beginning 2012<\/strong>, the discussions were stopped before converting the Heads of Agreement<\/strong><\/a> into formal contract.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The Indonesia East Natuna block oil and gas field<\/strong> was previously called Natuna-D Alfa<\/strong> and is located in the Riau Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

The East Natuna field<\/strong> would hold 500 million barrels of crude oil.<\/strong> <\/p>\r\n

Then East Natuna<\/strong> is the largest untapped natural gas<\/a> field in Asia<\/strong>, this giant natural gas<\/a> project<\/strong> is given to contain 222 trillion cubic feet (tcf)<\/strong> of natural gas<\/a><\/strong> in-place reserves<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

Despite its size this East Natuna gas<\/a> field<\/strong> present two challenges<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n

– 71% of carbon dioxide<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

– Remote location in regards of the nearest infrastructures to export the natural gas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThe 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska was in a remote location, too,\r\nas was BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf,\r\nbut location didn’t stop them from being disasters never cleaned up.\r\n

\r\nAnd see that “71% of carbon dioxide<\/strong>”?\r\nSame problem that caused Exxon to back off back in 1981.\r\nYet there’s Exxon three decades later looking again to unleash\r\nthat CO2 plus 500 million barrels of crude oil and 222 trillion cubic feet of gas to burn, contributing to the world-wide disaster of climate change.\r\n

\r\nThe era of fossil fuels is over. Not that\r\n\r\nGeorgia leads the U.S. in solar power jobs and deployment\r\nwhile China beats its own emissions pledge<\/a>,\r\nthe sun is rising and dirty oil and gas should all be left in the ground.\r\n

\r\nNo fracking, no new pipelines, and no LNG export.\r\nSun, wind, and water power now.\r\n
