Quarterman, 8 May 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/d1407277022cdbb73b4329d39e60313e.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nNRC\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reading-rm\/doc-collections\/event-status\/event\/en.html\">\r\nCurrent Event Notification Report for May 8, 2015<\/a>\r\nsays about Farley 1, near Dothan Alabama, on the Chattahoochee River, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/nuclear-reactors-near-here.html\">about 125 miles from here<\/a>:<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nTECHNICAL SPECIFICATION SHUTDOWN DUE TO REACTOR COOLANT PUMP TRIP\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;This notification is being made as required by 10 CFR\r\n50.72(b)(2)(i) due to a Farley Nuclear Plant Unit 1 shutdown\r\nrequired by Technical Specifications.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;At 0509 CDT on 5\/7\/2015, 1B Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) tripped\r\nduring transfer of 1B 4160V bus to 1B unit auxiliary transformer.\r\nTechnical Specification LCO 3.4.4 Condition A was entered for loss\r\nof a Reactor Coolant System (RCS) loop. Unit 1 reactor was shut down\r\nper operating procedures and entered Mode 3 at 0740 CDT.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;The NRC Resident Inspector has been notified.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nBut wait, there&#8217;s more. Both units 1 and 2 at Plant Hatch near Baxley, GA on the Altamaha River, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/nuclear-reactors-near-here.html\">about 100 miles from here<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nTHIS IS A CONTINUATION OF EN #50351\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n* * * UPDATE FROM STEVE BRUNSON TO CHARLES TEAL ON 4\/20\/15 AT 2126\r\nEDT * * *\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;During an expanded scope inspection, deficiencies in the following\r\nareas were observed that caused the affected barriers to be\r\nconsidered nonfunctional:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; A gap \ufffd&#8221; wide, 1&#8243; tall, and 6&#8243; deep was found at penetration\r\n1Z43H594D on the west wall of the U1 East Cableway (separating Fire\r\nArea 1104 and Fire Area 1020)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; Near penetration 1Z43J837D, and approximately 12&#8243; south and above\r\n1Z43H837D, gaps were observed in the mortar joint between CMU on the\r\nwest wall of the U1 East Cableway (separating Fire Area 1104 and\r\nFire Area 1020)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; A triangular gap 1&#8243; wide, 1&#8243; tall and 6&#8243; deep was found at\r\npenetration 1Z43H592D on the west wall of the U1 East Cableway\r\n(separating Fire Area 1104 and Fire Area 1020)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; A gap 4&#8243; tall and 3&#8243; wide was found behind Turn Box TB1-1272 which\r\ncovers penetrations 1Z43H590D, 1Z43H589D, 1Z43H588, and 1Z43H587D on\r\nthe west wall of the U1 East Cableway (separating Fire Area 1104 and\r\nFire Area 1020)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; At the architectural joint between the vertical wall to the\r\nhorizontal floor\/ceiling assembly above door 1C-22, above and to the\r\nsouth of 1Z43H1105D, a gap was observed approximately \ufffd&#8221; tall, 3&#8243;\r\nwide, and 6&#8243; deep on the west wall of the U1 East Cableway Foyer\r\n(separating Fire Area 1105 and Fire Area 0014K)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8211; Gap between the grout and the conduit of penetration 1Z43H778D\r\napproximately \ufffd&#8221; tall x 1.5&#8243; wide x 6&#8243; deep on the east wall of\r\nthe Unit 1 130&#8242; Elevation Control Building Working Floor Hallway\r\n(separating Fire Area 0014K and Fire Area 1105)\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;The nonconforming conditions observed for the affected fire\r\npenetrations and fire barriers were identified as affecting both\r\nsafe shutdown paths for Unit 2. Compensatory measures were already\r\nin place in accordance with the plant&#8217;s Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA)\r\nas a result of previous conditions involving degraded barriers in\r\nthe same fire areas and will remain in place until the fire barriers\r\nare repaired. The presence of the compensatory measures in addition\r\nto portable fire protection equipment located in adjacent areas\r\nensure the safe shutdown paths are preserved until the degraded\r\nconditions are repaired.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThat Plant Hatch report goes on for several pages, including this:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;The nonconforming conditions observed for the affected penetration\r\nand fire barrier were identified as affecting both safe shutdown\r\npaths for Unit 1 and Unit 2. The presence of the compensatory measures in addition to\r\nportable fire protection equipment located in adjacent areas ensures\r\nthe safe shutdown paths are preserved until the degraded conditions\r\nare repaired&#8230;.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd how safe was Hatch <em>before<\/em> the problem was previously discovered\r\nand compensatory measures were applied?\r\nWhen will it be repaired?\r\nAnd why should we believe it will really be fixed this time?\r\n<p>Georgia is already the fastest-growing solar market in the country, and\r\nthe Georgia legislature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/hb-57-solar-financing-bill-unanimously-passed-georgia-house.html\">unanimously passed a solar financing bill<\/a>\r\nthat will make the sun rise on the southeast even faster.\r\n Georgia&#8217;s Governor and Lt.
