\r\nA fire and shut down of Indian Point 3 didn’t even make the front page\r\nof the New York Times,\r\nand no mention that\r\nSpectra Energy wants to build its 42-inch fracked methane\r\n\r\nAlgonquin Incremental Market (AIM)<\/a> only 1,500 feet from Indian Point.\r\nPlus an oil leak, all next to the Hudson River.\r\nMeanwhile, Oyster Creek (NJ), Three Mile Island 1 (PA), and Farley (AL)\r\nare all down, and numerous fire prevention deficiencies were reported for Hatch 1 and 2 (GA).\r\nWhen did you last hear of a solar leak or explosion?\r\n

\r\nThe transformer on the side of the turbine building caught fire\r\naround 6 p.m., shutting down Unit 3 at the nuclear power plant on\r\nthe Hudson River, Entergy, which owns and operates the power plant,\r\nsaid on its Twitter account….\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n<\/object>\r\n

\r\nAfter being extinguished the fire was “apparently reignited” by the\r\nheat of the transformer, Cuomo said. Asked if all protocols worked\r\nproperly in response to the fire, he said he was “not prepared to\r\nsay that yet.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“This was a relatively minor situation, but when you’re talking\r\nabout a nuclear power plant there are no really minor situations,”\r\nCuomo said, calling the plant “controversial” because it is “a\r\nstone’s throw from one of the most densely populated urban areas on\r\nthe planet. So it is inherently problematic.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“We’ve had too many emergencies of late,” Cuomo added. “These\r\nsituations are very important, and again, I take nothing lightly\r\nwhen it comes to this plant specifically.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n“There is a lot of foam and a lot of oil and now we are\r\nworried about that leaking in to the Hudson River,” [Gov.\r\nCuomo] said. Foam or oil could enter the river through storm drains,\r\nhe said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nMeanwhile, the\r\nNuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)\r\n\r\nCurrent Event Notification Report for May 8, 2015<\/a>\r\n(NRC doesn’t post reports on weekends)\r\nsays even less:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nOFFSITE NOTIFICATION DUE TO SHUTDOWN FOR AN UNISOLABLE STEAM LEAK\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“At 0700 on 5\/7\/15, Indian Point Unit 3 commenced a shutdown due to\r\nthe inability to isolate a steam leak on a feedwater instrument\r\nline.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Offsite power is available.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Indian Point Unit 2 is unaffected and remains in Mode 1 at 100%\r\npower.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The NRC Resident Inspector, the NYISO (New York Independent System\r\nOperator), and NY Public State Commission have been notified.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nAnd that’s not the only reactor down today.\r\nThe same report says of Oyster Creek 1 in New Jersey:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nAUTOMATIC REACTOR SCRAM DUE TO TURBINE TRIP\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Today at 1727 EDT, an automatic scram from a turbine trip occurred.\r\nThe cause of the turbine trip is currently under investigation. All\r\nrods inserted into the core and all systems functioned as expected\r\nduring the scram.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The event is reportable within 4 hours per\r\n10CFR50.72(b)(2)(iv)(B)—any event or condition that results in\r\nactuation of the reactor protection system (RPS) when the reactor is\r\ncritical except when the actuation results from and is part of a\r\npre-planned sequence during testing or reactor operation.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nPlant response to the scram was uncomplicated and the plant is\r\nstable in Mode 3.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe licensee has notified the NRC Resident Inspector.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nNevermind that\r\n\r\nNRC reported 28 January 2015 after inspection of Oyster Creek<\/a>:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nThe NRC inspectors did not identify any findings or violations of\r\nmore than minor significance.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThree Mile Island 1 isn’t in the latest Current Event Notification Report,\r\nalthough NRC data shows TMI1 dropping from 100% power; see the black line:\r\n

\r\nSolar power is faster, cheaper, and far cleaner to install,\r\nand doesn’t leak or explode.\r\nNow that energy storage solutions are getting in gear<\/a>, the old baseload-capacity excuse for nuclear also goes away.\r\nThe century of fossil fuels and nukes is over.\r\nIt’s the era of sun, wind, and water power now.\r\n
