The authors also find a\ngreater reliance upon public assistance programs among Wal-Mart workers\nas compared to other California retail workers. Finally, the authors\nestimate the additional costs to taxpayers of \u201cWal-Martization\u201d\u2014the\nadoption of Wal-Mart\u2019s wage and health benefits standards by retailers\nthroughout California.\n<\/blockquote>\nHere is an extract from the study:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nWe estimate that Wal-Mart workers in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irle.berkeley.edu\/cwed\/dube.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.irle.berkeley.edu\/cwed\/images\/dube.jpg\"><\/a>\nCalifornia earn on average 31 percent less than\nworkers employed in large retail as a whole,\nreceiving an average wage of $9.70 per hour\ncompared to the $14.01 average hourly earnings\nfor employees in large retail (firms with\n1,000 or more employees). In addition, 23 percent\nfewer Wal-Mart workers are covered by\nemployer-sponsored health insurance than\nlarge retail workers as a whole. The differences\nare even greater when Wal-Mart workers are\ncompared to unionized grocery workers. In\nthe San Francisco Bay Area, non-managerial\nWal-Mart employees earn on average $9.40 an\nhour, compared to $15.31 for unionized grocery\nworkers\u201439 percent less\u2014and are half\nas likely to have health benefits.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/laborcenter.berkeley.edu\/staff\/jacobs.shtml\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/laborcenter.berkeley.edu\/staff\/images\/jacobs2.jpg\"><\/a>\nAt these low-wages, many Wal-Mart\nworkers rely on public safety net programs\u2014\nsuch as food stamps, Medi-Cal, and\nsubsidized housing\u2014to make ends meet.
