What will the VSU Foundation do now?\r\nOne year after\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/vsu-new-special-committee-on-sustainability-to-investigate-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\">\r\nthe committee was appointed 10 April 2014<\/a>, it made a decision\r\n8 April 2015:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/sign-seen-on-oak-st-footbridge-at-vsu-today.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/cropcrop-oak-small.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nS.A.V.E. applauds the decision by the President&#8217;s Special Committee\r\non Campus Sustainability to support fossil fuel divestment.\r\nLeadership and stewardship are part and parcel to Valdosta State&#8217;s\r\nrole as an institution of higher education and we call on VSU to\r\nhonor these ethos by divesting from fossil fuels, ending its\r\nprofiteering from ecological harm, environmental destruction, and\r\nhuman suffering.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nBenjamin Vieth, the representative of <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.valdosta.edu\/vsu\/stuorg\/save\/\">Students Against Violating the Environment (S.A.V.E.)<\/a> on that Committee, sent the above announcement after approval by S.A.V.E.\r\nAmong\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/vsu-new-special-committee-on-sustainability-to-investigate-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\">\r\nother organizations included on that committee<\/a>,<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\nfollowing a November 2013 vote by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/vsu-environmental-issues-committee-backs-save-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\">\r\nFaculty Environmental Issues Committee (EIC)<\/a>,\r\nthe\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/save-won-at-vsu-faculty-senate.html\">Faculty Senate voted 21 November 2013<\/a> for divestment.\r\nThe Student Government Association (SGA)\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/massive-vote-for-saves-fossil-fuel-divestment-by-vsu-student-government-association.html\">\r\nvoted 4 March 2014 for divestment<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nEIC, SGA, and S.A.V.E. are on the President&#8217;s Special Committee.\r\nI&#8217;m not sure about the positions of the other organizations,\r\nwhich include\r\nthe Physical Plant, the Council on Staff Affairs, and the\r\nCenter for Business and Economic Research,\r\nbut it seems like at least one of them must have also voted for\r\ndivestment to reach a majority.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:300px\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7455\/10552600425_2a096cacbf_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nA year may seem like a long time, but fossil fuel divestment is still\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\">\r\nfaster than divestment from apartheid, tobacco, and armaments<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nAs\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\">\r\nthen-SAVE President Danielle Jordan said<\/a> when VSU opened the\r\nsolar canopy at the Odum Library in October 2013,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nWe cannot address climate change without decreasing our dependency\r\non fossil fuels and solar is one way we could change that.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nLet&#8217;s remember that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/divestment-is-about-undermining-the-political-power-of-the-fossil-fuel-industry-tim-dechristopher.html\">\r\ndivestment is about undermining the political power\r\nof the fossil fuel industry<\/a>, as Tim DeChristopher said that same month in\r\nresponse to Harvard President Drew Faust&#8217;s excuses for not divesting.\r\n<p>\r\nAnd that&#8217;s already happening, with the regulated-utility-campaign-funded\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/more-solar-by-georgia-power-ga-psc.html\">\r\nGeorgia Public Service Commission\r\nvoting 11 July 2013<\/a> to make Georgia Power buy more\r\nsolar power,\r\nand with\r\nsolar financing bill HB 57\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/ga-senate-unanimously-approved-solar-financing-bill.html\">\r\nunanimously passing both the Georgia House and Senate in March 2015<\/a>, waiting\r\nonly on\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/19\/spectra-energy-and-gas-pipeline-campaign-contributions-to-ga-gov-nathan-deal\/\">\r\nfossil-fuel-campaign-funded Gov. Nathan Deal<\/a> to sign it.\r\n<p>\r\nThere&#8217;s even a band of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/maybe-vsu-should-join-this-band-of-fossil-free-foundations.html\">fossil free foundations<\/a>.\r\nEven the <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/25\/rockefeller-brothers-fund-divesting-from-coal-and-tar-sands-but-not-from-natural-gas\/\">Rockefeller Brothers Fund<\/a>, heirs of John D. Rockefeller who started the fossil fuel industry,\r\nare divesting from tar sands.\r\n<p>\r\nThat leaves at VSU only the VSU Foundation, which actually controls\r\nVSU&#8217;s investment fund.\r\nThey were last heard from officially\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/your-well-intentioned-request-is-impractical-vsu-foundation.html\">\r\n29 October 2013, writing in a letter to SAVE<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nCompliance with your well-intentioned request is impractical for a\r\nnumber of reasons and perhaps even a breach of the fiduciary\r\nresponsibility that all of our trustees take very seriously.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWhen even the Rockefeller Brothers Fund is divesting,\r\ncan anybody seriously believe that\r\nditching fossil fuels in favor of renewable energy stocks\r\nwould be a breach of fiduciary responsibility?\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/solar-growth-like-compound-interest-has-turned-al-gore-into-an-optimist.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8226\/8421700685_a46c93cf27_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nWhen the rosiest projections for shale gas are only for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/56-increase-shale-gas-2012-2040-100-increase-solar-2012-2014.html\">\r\n56% increase in 28 years<\/a> and\r\nthe\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/lng-export-boom-going-bust.html\">\r\nLNG export boom is going bust<\/a>,\r\nwhile\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/as-predicted-u-s-solar-capacity-grew-more-than-400-in-4-years.html\">\r\nU.S. solar capacity is doubling every two years<\/a>?\r\nFixing climate change <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/fixing-climate-change-is-profitable.html\">is profitable<\/a>.\r\nSolar power\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/solar-growth-like-compound-interest-has-turned-al-gore-into-an-optimist.html\">\r\nis going to win<\/a>,\r\njust like\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/solar-power-will-win-like-the-internet-did.html\">the Internet did<\/a>.\r\nFiduciary responsibility might have been\r\nbuying fossil fuel stocks might have been selling horse buggies\r\nin 1915, but fiduciary responsibility in 2015 would be selling\r\nfossil fuel stocks and buying renewable energy stocks.\r\n<p>\r\nAnd that&#8217;s not all stewardship is.\r\nLet&#8217;s review the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/save-fossil-fuel-divestment-on-spectator-front-page-twice-in-two-weeks.html\">\r\nVSU Trustee Handbook<\/a> again:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<ol start=\"3\">\r\n<li>\r\nStewardship\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\nTo provide an attractive vehicle for donors to use to support the University.\r\n<li>\r\nTo maintain a relationship with the University which inspires the confidence of\r\nfaculty, staff, students, and administration.\r\n<li>\r\nTo invest the endowments held in trust for the University to achieve returns\r\namong the best in the country for endowments\r\nof similar size.\r\n<li>\r\nTo invest the Foundation&#8217;s resources in consultation with the University to take\r\nadvantage of unusual opportunities to advance the University when these\r\nopportunities would not otherwise be available to the University. \r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nFaculty, staff, students, and administration have all said what they want:\r\nfossil fuel divestment.\r\nThe consultation has happened.\r\n<p>\r\nStanford\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/stanford-beats-harvard-divests-from-coal.html\">\r\nlistened to students, faculty, and staff and divested from coal<\/a>.\r\nHarvard continues to refuse to divest, and\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3825978\/divest-harvard-closed-doors\/\">\r\njust got written up\r\nin Time Magazine by a former student saying<\/a>\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nIt turned me from a bystander into a protester.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWhich do you want, VSU Foundation?\r\n<p>\r\nWill you join Harvard in stonewalling divestment and get nationwide\r\nbad publicity?\r\n<p>\r\nOr will you join Stanford in beating Harvard, with good relations\r\nwith students, staff, faculty, and administration, and good publicity\r\nto provide an attractive vehicle for donors to use to support the University?\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Students, staff, faculty, and administration all say divest from fossil fuels.
