What will the VSU Foundation do now?<br \/>\nOne year after<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/vsu-new-special-committee-on-sustainability-to-investigate-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\"><br \/>\nthe committee was appointed 10 April 2014<\/a>, it made a decision<br \/>\n8 April 2015:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/sign-seen-on-oak-st-footbridge-at-vsu-today.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/cropcrop-oak-small.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nS.A.V.E. applauds the decision by the President&#8217;s Special Committee<br \/>\non Campus Sustainability to support fossil fuel divestment.<br \/>\nLeadership and stewardship are part and parcel to Valdosta State&#8217;s<br \/>\nrole as an institution of higher education and we call on VSU to<br \/>\nhonor these ethos by divesting from fossil fuels, ending its<br \/>\nprofiteering from ecological harm, environmental destruction, and<br \/>\nhuman suffering.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nBenjamin Vieth, the representative of <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.valdosta.edu\/vsu\/stuorg\/save\/\">Students Against Violating the Environment (S.A.V.E.)<\/a> on that Committee, sent the above announcement after approval by S.A.V.E.<br \/>\nAmong<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/vsu-new-special-committee-on-sustainability-to-investigate-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\"><br \/>\nother organizations included on that committee<\/a>,<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>following a November 2013 vote by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/vsu-environmental-issues-committee-backs-save-fossil-fuel-divestment.html\"><br \/>\nFaculty Environmental Issues Committee (EIC)<\/a>,<br \/>\nthe<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/save-won-at-vsu-faculty-senate.html\">Faculty Senate voted 21 November 2013<\/a> for divestment.<br \/>\nThe Student Government Association (SGA)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/massive-vote-for-saves-fossil-fuel-divestment-by-vsu-student-government-association.html\"><br \/>\nvoted 4 March 2014 for divestment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nEIC, SGA, and S.A.V.E. are on the President&#8217;s Special Committee.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not sure about the positions of the other organizations,<br \/>\nwhich include<br \/>\nthe Physical Plant, the Council on Staff Affairs, and the<br \/>\nCenter for Business and Economic Research,<br \/>\nbut it seems like at least one of them must have also voted for<br \/>\ndivestment to reach a majority.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:300px\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7455\/10552600425_2a096cacbf_n.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nA year may seem like a long time, but fossil fuel divestment is still<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\"><br \/>\nfaster than divestment from apartheid, tobacco, and armaments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nAs<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/fossil-fuel-divestment-fastest.html\"><br \/>\nthen-SAVE President Danielle Jordan said<\/a> when VSU opened the<br \/>\nsolar canopy at the Odum Library in October 2013,<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nWe cannot address climate change without decreasing our dependency<br \/>\non fossil fuels and solar is one way we could change that.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nLet&#8217;s remember that<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/10\/divestment-is-about-undermining-the-political-power-of-the-fossil-fuel-industry-tim-dechristopher.html\"><br \/>\ndivestment is about undermining the political power<br \/>\nof the fossil fuel industry<\/a>, as Tim DeChristopher said that same month in<br \/>\nresponse to Harvard President Drew Faust&#8217;s excuses for not divesting.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd that&#8217;s already happening, with the regulated-utility-campaign-funded<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/more-solar-by-georgia-power-ga-psc.html\"><br \/>\nGeorgia Public Service Commission<br \/>\nvoting 11 July 2013<\/a> to make Georgia Power buy more<br \/>\nsolar power,<br \/>\nand with<br \/>\nsolar financing bill HB 57<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/ga-senate-unanimously-approved-solar-financing-bill.html\"><br \/>\nunanimously passing both the Georgia House and Senate in March 2015<\/a>, waiting<br \/>\nonly on<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/19\/spectra-energy-and-gas-pipeline-campaign-contributions-to-ga-gov-nathan-deal\/\"><br \/>\nfossil-fuel-campaign-funded Gov. Nathan Deal<\/a> to sign it.<\/p>\n<p>\nThere&#8217;s even a band of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/maybe-vsu-should-join-this-band-of-fossil-free-foundations.html\">fossil free foundations<\/a>.<br \/>\nEven the <a href=\"http:\/\/spectrabusters.org\/2014\/09\/25\/rockefeller-brothers-fund-divesting-from-coal-and-tar-sands-but-not-from-natural-gas\/\">Rockefeller Brothers Fund<\/a>, heirs of John D. Rockefeller who started the fossil fuel industry,<br \/>\nare divesting from tar sands.<\/p>\n<p>\nThat leaves at VSU only the VSU Foundation, which actually controls<br \/>\nVSU&#8217;s investment fund.<br \/>\nThey were last heard from officially<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/your-well-intentioned-request-is-impractical-vsu-foundation.html\"><br \/>\n29 October 2013, writing in a letter to SAVE<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nCompliance with your well-intentioned request is impractical for a<br \/>\nnumber of reasons and perhaps even a breach of the fiduciary<br \/>\nresponsibility that all of our trustees take very seriously.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWhen even the Rockefeller Brothers Fund is divesting,<br \/>\ncan anybody seriously believe that<br \/>\nditching fossil fuels in favor of renewable energy stocks<br \/>\nwould be a breach of fiduciary responsibility?<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/solar-growth-like-compound-interest-has-turned-al-gore-into-an-optimist.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8226\/8421700685_a46c93cf27_n.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nWhen the rosiest projections for shale gas are only for<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/06\/56-increase-shale-gas-2012-2040-100-increase-solar-2012-2014.html\"><br \/>\n56% increase in 28 years<\/a> and<br \/>\nthe<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/lng-export-boom-going-bust.html\"><br \/>\nLNG export boom is going bust<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhile<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/as-predicted-u-s-solar-capacity-grew-more-than-400-in-4-years.html\"><br \/>\nU.S. solar capacity is doubling every two years<\/a>?<br \/>\nFixing climate change <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/02\/fixing-climate-change-is-profitable.html\">is profitable<\/a>.<br \/>\nSolar power<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/solar-growth-like-compound-interest-has-turned-al-gore-into-an-optimist.html\"><br \/>\nis going to win<\/a>,<br \/>\njust like<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/solar-power-will-win-like-the-internet-did.html\">the Internet did<\/a>.<br \/>\nFiduciary responsibility might have been<br \/>\nbuying fossil fuel stocks might have been selling horse buggies<br \/>\nin 1915, but fiduciary responsibility in 2015 would be selling<br \/>\nfossil fuel stocks and buying renewable energy stocks.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd that&#8217;s not all stewardship is.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s review the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/save-fossil-fuel-divestment-on-spectator-front-page-twice-in-two-weeks.html\"><br \/>\nVSU Trustee Handbook<\/a> again:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\nStewardship<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nTo provide an attractive vehicle for donors to use to support the University.<\/p>\n<li>\nTo maintain a relationship with the University which inspires the confidence of<br \/>\nfaculty, staff, students, and administration.<\/p>\n<li>\nTo invest the endowments held in trust for the University to achieve returns<br \/>\namong the best in the country for endowments<br \/>\nof similar size.<\/p>\n<li>\nTo invest the Foundation&#8217;s resources in consultation with the University to take<br \/>\nadvantage of unusual opportunities to advance the University when these<br \/>\nopportunities would not otherwise be available to the University.\n<\/ul>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nFaculty, staff, students, and administration have all said what they want:<br \/>\nfossil fuel divestment.<br \/>\nThe consultation has happened.<\/p>\n<p>\nStanford<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/stanford-beats-harvard-divests-from-coal.html\"><br \/>\nlistened to students, faculty, and staff and divested from coal<\/a>.<br \/>\nHarvard continues to refuse to divest, and<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3825978\/divest-harvard-closed-doors\/\"><br \/>\njust got written up<br \/>\nin Time Magazine by a former student saying<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\n<p>\nIt turned me from a bystander into a protester.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWhich do you want, VSU Foundation?<\/p>\n<p>\nWill you join Harvard in stonewalling divestment and get nationwide<br \/>\nbad publicity?<\/p>\n<p>\nOr will you join Stanford in beating Harvard, with good relations<br \/>\nwith students, staff, faculty, and administration, and good publicity<br \/>\nto provide an attractive vehicle for donors to use to support the University?<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students, staff, faculty, and administration all say divest from fossil fuels.
